There is just a certain quality about Kelly that is a bit off-putting to me...I think she acts too condescending when she explains things or makes remarks sometimes.

Who cares if Bernadette plays with her hair? She's got a ton of it and it's really curly, if I had hair like that I'd be pulling and twisting it around all day long!

Right, but my point is, if it doesn't matter that Bernadette plays with her hair then it shouldn't matter that Kelly does.

I actually like Kelly Ripa as a talk-show host. She has a spunky personality, and I think she works well with Regis.
Just because Bernadette is not his co-host, I'm not going to be anti-Kelly or anti whoever else his co-host would have been.

I'm not against Kelly Ripa because Bernadette is not the co-host! I've never even seen Bernadette on the show, as a guest OR co-host. Just because I'm a fan of someone doesn't mean I'm anti everyone else.

What I'm trying to say is that I think they should have picked someone opposite of Kathie Lee, and Kelly sometimes acts as if they could be related!

Relax. I wasn't saying you're anti-anybody.

I was merely stating my own personal opinions about Kelly.
That second part of my last response was in no way directed towards anybody on this board; it was just a general statement. If I am directing a comment towards you (BroadwayBaby123) or anyone else on this board, I will make it quite obvious. You don't have to be so defensive.

I'm not losing sleep over what you have to say, but since your post came right after mine and started with "Right, but..." I assumed it was directed towards me.

No big deal...just be more clear next time.

Yes, its true...Bernadette was definitely considered for the job. And I really believe that if she had wanted to do the job she would most likely be the one sitting in that cohost chair right now and not Kelly.Everyone at the show adores Bernadette and she is considered a very good friend of the show.

What it ended up coming down to was Kelly or Jane Krajkowski getting the job . I was even told that someone from the show( I think a co-producer or writer...can't remember which now) wanted Jane to get the job so badly that they quit once it was decided that Kelly was going to get the job.

I just personally think Kelly is lacking a bit from experience and even knowledge in things that Regis relates to. Half the time she sits there not even seeming to grasp what he is talking about. I realize they probably thought they'd get a bigger audience with Regis--being the mature, well known man who's done this show from the beginning...and then adding in a young, hip, relatively unknown actress. But I just think they don't have enough in common where they can really relate to each other. If you'll notice, its usually Regis doing most of the talking when there is more of an older person being interviewed...especially if they're really well known. And I think this is because Regis makes the interview more interesting by bringing up topics with the guest that Kelly probably wouldn't know much about and that Regis can relate to them more than Kelly. And you'll also notice that Kelly hardly ever says as much even when there is a younger person on.

PS-- Shane West is scheduled to be on REGIS on Tuesday as well.

I think I'd have to agree with bwaybaby's assesment of Kelly as a co-host. My old roommate used to watch the show (she'd tape it whenever her favorite stars were on) and occasionally, when she was watching, I'd come in to talk to her and catch some of it.

So here's my personal assesment of both Kelly and Bernadette as co-hosts (I'd do Jane Krakowski, but I don't know her that well as an actress or a co-host):

Kelly: I can see why she appeals to a younger audience, and even a middle audience, given that she is young enough for 20-somethings to relate to, and experienced enough with marriage and family (she's got 3 kids, right?) for middle-aged, and/or house-bound caregivers to relate to.

HOWEVER, personally, I find her mannerisms and style (the way she carries herself, the way she speaks) to be somewhat condescending. She doesn't always know what Regis is talking about (if she's not familiar with the subject matter) and so, like I suppose a co-host is ought to do in that case, she tries to pretend that she does, or she tries to be funny, or witty (as a cover) and it falls flat. I think (for me) the real problem I have with her is that she comes off as somehow disengenuine. And so I find nothing original or especially outstanding about her. Frankly, I can think of many largely unknown Broadway personalities who would have been much wittier and appealing as co-hosts.

I also feel as if Kelly overestimates her star-power, influence, and talent (my mother's watched AMC for years, so I've seen her acting and was never wholly impressed by it.) And so now, with the soap, the up-coming sitcom, and Regis, I find the over-exposure irritating rather than ingratiating. And I mean that as a personal criticism, and not as fact or anything. No offense intended towards Kelly fans.

Bernadette: I think, honestly, the three things Bernadette has working in her favor are:

1) she's not as young as Kelly, and so doesn't come off as... well, such a youngster. Or so naieve. It also means there's more for Bernadette and Regis to talk about; their life experiences cover more shared periods of time.

2) Bernadette and Regis have also have been friends for a number of years, and you can see that when they interact --it makes the interaction seem more intimate, sort of like we're overhearing a conversation two friends. And intimacy is extraordinarily important in regards to developing the relationship between host and audience. If we feel the co-hosts are truly enjoying one another's company (not as co-hosts, but as PEOPLE,) then we often find that we enjoy their company as well.

2) Bernadette's singing, and her long, LONG-standing reputation (on-stage, for being a "broadway sweetheart," and off-stage, for being a nice person with both co-stars and fans) gives her a huge edge. People know her. Or -- should I say -- they FEEL like they know her. People of ALL ages feel like they know her. They know her singing, (and the type of music she sings, which is fairly innocuous) and this makes her seem like a very warm, inviting person. It makes her seem like someone we know, someone we'd want as a friend. Again, this is important for the audience to feel, because what we are essentially doing is inviting these TV personalities into our homes for an hour every morning.

Anyway. I have no idea why I stated all of that, except that I'm bored and Kelly Ripa is on the cover of this week's TV Guide, and she really does annoy me. (Which has nothing to do with Bernadette, really, but I think we were also talking about why Bernadette made such a good co-host.)

For the record, I am glad Bernadette doesn't host Regis. And even if she did, I doubt I would have the time or the desire to watch her. (I'm just not into talk shows -- TV or radio.) Also, I think she's much happier on Broadway. (Wasting her voice to chatter away on a talk-show when she could be singing... well, I think it's obvious what she should be doing in that case. hee.)

And wow, this was a long post. But there you go. I just wasted 15 minutes. Happy almost 4th of July!

addendum: my apologies for the typos in the above post. It should be 1, 2, and 3. (among other mistakes.) Man, I get sloppy late at night.

Yeah, I mean as an actress I don't like Kelly Ripa...then again, I don't lik Soap Operas in general. I'll probably watch the first epsiode of her new sitcom to see if I like it, but who knows what will come of that.
But, as a co-host I tolerate her. I think they could have done worse. I don't watch everyday, but when I do I'm not offended by watching her.

For the record, she left All My Children a while ago.

i like Kelly...i've watched all my children for a LONG time and i liked her on that show and i like her on Regis. i think Bernadette would have made a better co-host, but i'm glad she's not doing it...she has so much to offer on broadway that it would seem like a waste to do a daily show...she's just too busy for it right now. kelly is, in my opinion, very funny, and very sweet.

Here's what Tom Shales, TV critic for the Washington Post, had to say about Bernadette:

"Some guest hosts were
magnificent, such as the awesome Bernadette Peters, but impractical; Peters
is a musical-comedy actor overqualified for the job."
