Went to see the big POTO movie with my mom and sister-I'm back in New Orleans...where it's supposed to *snow*. Just flurries-probably nothing will stick, but still...

I went in with low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. I was unimpressed with Butler-out of all the men who have played the Phantom, they picked this guy? However-I thought his acting and characterization of the Phantom was fine. His singing,IMO,was otherwise. I'd like to see it again, because I'm a bit torn. I'm not mooning over Michael Crawford-for this film's conception,he would have been too old for the part (especially for the very last scene). But Emmy Rossum and Minnie Driver were fine.

But oh...this movie is GORGEOUS. The opera house-the costumes, especially for "Masquerade" are wonderful. The orchestrations are fine.

I thought the premise of the story being older Raoul's flashback was very effective (particularly filming older Raoul's scenes in grainy black and white). Delaying the fall of the chandelier was a fine decision-and it's such a big deal that I think that those who see the stage version after seeing the movie will be a bit disappointed.

I have to tell you-when the auctioneer said "Perhaps we can frighten away the ghost of so many years ago with a little illumination? Gentlemen!"

And then....

BAAAAAAAM!
BAM!BAM!BAM!BAM!BAAAAAAM!
BAMBAMBAMBAMBAAAAM!
etc

A sudden wave of nostalgia swept over me-I am not exaggerating-I was stunned at what I felt. I was a major Phanatic when I was in fifth and sixth grade-I had a Phantom watch,Phantom T-shirt and sweatshirt,poster...everything. Cameron Mackintosh is good,I tell you. That was also the Christmas I got New Kids on the Block merchandise. God bless my parents.

But that overture started, the chandelier was revealed, and then the dust swept off the opera seats and building and backstage, and it was just beautiful, and I was....damn you Andrew Lloyd Webber! You still got me!

And I thought I was sooooooo over you.

It took me way back. And I was all "Oooh! Pretty!" and gone were my pretenses,I tell ya!

I'm not going to nitpick the movie. I have criticisms, sure. And I think a lot of the criticisms are coming from 1)People who have a hatred of everything ALW 2)Michael Crawford fans upset that he wasn't chosen and 3)show fans who don't like the changes. It's not the greatest movie musical ever-but if you go with a certain attitude, you'll probably enjoy it,if you don't fall in with one of the three groups.

Hope everyone has an excellent holiday. I'm off for a while.

Jenn

Oh, thanks for this, Jenn--I'm neutral on ALW and Phantom..., but you have convinced me to see this movie.

Have a nice **warm** Holiday.

I know, I went to see it also. It was a GORGEOUS movie! Emmy Rossum's voice was BEAUTIFUL[especially on the high notes]! She's only 18 yrs old! Can you believe that? Does anyone who played 'Meg'? She was pretty too! Genard Butler's voice was alright, but Micheal Crawford's voice is more abstucting[sp.?]. Anyway, I did like the movie! I'm SO damn happy that they FINALLY made a movie based on the play! I saw other versions of the movie, but they were hell! Seriously! Gotta run!

Leonie, you can check out imdb.com to find out who played 'Meg.'
I have not yet seen this film. My friend's ex-friend is Emmy Rossum. They both studied at the Met together and were in the Children's Choir... but I hear that Emmy isn't really all that. Then again, I may have a bias cause of my friend.

I found that the movie was amazing. It took a broadway show and brought it into new light. However I find that if you want to see a production the best is sitting in a live theatre prduction with sets and lights and sound and leaving knowing that what you just saw changed you. I hope that this movie brings more people back to the theatre to see it live.
I know some of my other friends did not like but that is their opion.
I am just amazed that before the movie was released when I was in London In 2004 I actually walk among those sets that where in the movie. The lobby in the burnt down theatre was crappy to see live. I however because of the copyright laws and it not been released I was not allowed to take pictures I really wanted too though. The best part though was learning how tv shows where made. My Dad's offices mate's son work at the BBC Pinewood Studio as a scirpt writer. I was a great trip.

Is it a sure thing that Emmy Rossum did all of her own singing? I heard rumors that it may have been dubbed....
