Although, I'm not a Bernadette Peters fan. I just happened across this site in a Google search... I never believed that she was the character. I just felt like I was watching BP's play Momma Rose. Perhaps I'm too partial to the Lansbury recording.

I saw it last night also - and unfortunately, have to agree that Bernadette has some work to do before she can claim Rose for her own. She seemed to have difficulty maintaining character - and was especially tentative with the blocking in the first act. I hate to say it - but Tyne Daley was much better in the last Broadway revival. The rest of the cast was strong however - especially Herbie. Hopefully Bernadette will find the character by the time the show opens.

I am surprised at how eager people are to express a negative opinion. I adored Tyne Daly in the last revival of Gypsy, however she toured with the show for MANY MONTHS
before appearing on Broadway.
Bernadette is being judged on ONE public performance. Why not give her a chance?
I am also looking forward to the new Gypsy CD. Bernadette has the most pleasing voice of any Rose I have heard.

Truth be told, my first reaction was similar to the original poster. I kept thinking, "That's Bernadette...not Mama Rose."
Maybe it's because I'm use to seeing her in concert, just being herself.
I did like the show, but I saw things that I thought could have or would have been done dfferently.
There were certain scenes that grabbed my attention and made me believe she was the character. Let me think....Oh, the scenes in the dressing room at the burlesque house; and of course the entire ending starting with "Rose's Turn" right to the curtain call. Maybe it's just that Bernadette started feeling more comfortable in her role during the second act.
I am extrememly confident that by the end (probably before) of previews, Bernadette will have found her audience and be more comfortable with the role.

yes and that is what previews are for. I think it is fine to express your negative opinions if they are done in a respectful fashion. I also agree there is work to be done by everyone. Monday was far from perfect but for a first preview for the first time in front of a paying audience, I felt they all did a wonderful job. I'm sure it will improve significantly in the next month.
