Sorry if I offended anyone with my language but that is the only way to describe it. It's late so I'm not going to go into it much now. It was long - 3 hours. There are some things that need to be fixed but she brought down the house with Rose's Turn.

To moljul

I was skimming ATC and just had to say that when I read your spoiler post I first read "hand" as "head" and thought yikes! Was Peters in good voice?

Alright, let me start off by saying I am very very exhausted so this isn't going to be long....
I thought Bernadette was great!!! Some of the directing decisions sort of confused me.Like how they were saying she was going to be a sexier Rose and then there she was with all this stage make up on and grandma clothes to make her look late 50s. Almost even 60s from where I was. Seriously, I was shocked when she walked out on to the stage! She looked like a cross of Angela Lansbury's Rose and Linda Lavin's character in Hollywood Arms LOL.The kids were great! Especially Heather ( Baby June) WOW That girl is talented and just stands out so much!! Tammy exceeded my expectations!! I thought she was perfectly cast! John was really great too... especially in Act 2 when Herbie is leaving Rose...WOW!! What power and emotion he put out there! Tulsa I thought was great too...and a cutie I think the highlight of the evening for me was TOGETHER,WHEREVER WE GO which was very very cute and ROSE'S TURN...I was seriously just in awe of her after that number!! Coco was ADORABLE as Chowsie! And the Lamb was adorable too( the lamb got a lot of "Awwwwws" when she was brought out on stage). I thought things went incredibly smoothly for the first preview...there were maybe two sound problems and something fell backstage causing a loud bang during a pretty dramatic and quite part of the show and then Bernadette accidentally wacked one of the "farmboys" in the face LOL But that was it. I think they could have done a LOT more with the set...I was sort of disappointed with that...maybe it just needs to grow on me. I think a lot of it is because they had that huge stage and not much scenery or props half the time. Anyways, I'll definiatley be going back to see it again soon!!!

What was that that fell? It looked quite large. And that was quite amuzing when Bernadette wacked the guy in the face. She immediately put her arm around him. :-) I enjoyed the sets with it giving you a backstage look at what was going on. I also thought they were going to make her more sexy and was expecting some cleavage exposing in Rose's Turn but they did have her dressed very appropriately for the style of the day. Though it did seem a bit matronly. They did go a little farther with Rose's and Herbie's sex life in Small World but I would almost like them to have more of those moments. This is after all a Sam Mendes production - he puts sex in everything.

Oh by the way, PTM, I went back and looked at my post on ATC to see what I said and Yow, I"m glad I didn't accidently write head. LOL Though that might have been a very Sam Mendes thing to do. ha ha

Oh I forgot, she was in quite good voice. She looked somewhat tired and her voice seemed a little worn at times but with all the rehearsing they have been doing, I didn't find that at all surprising.

There are no words to describe how breath taking her performance was. It was outstanding. And just think, Opening Night is in a month, when her voice really gets in shape this show will be unstoppable. Details tomorrow, well, actually later today since its 2 in the AM

I don't know exactly what it was that fell. I was trying to pay attention to the show especially because that was such a dramatic scene. Plus, we were in the front row center and I didnt want to look away distracting everyone around me. I think half of them probably saw my jaw drop open when Bernadette walked out LOL

She was defintely exhausted!! But from what I was told from others in the show...she was in much better form tonight than she was lastnight. Its going to take some time for her to get use to doing 8 shows a week again. And I forgot to say how funny GOTTA GET A GIMMICK WAS!!!! Especially Mazeppa!!!!!

yes, it was an unfortunate moment to have something fall but I felt they did well staying with the highly dramatic moment and I'm sure they were exhausted by that time.

Yeeaaay! I'm thrilled with the comments here and on ATC! Yesss! This is gonna be great...Huge sigh of relief from the anticipatory tension. Moljul, loved all your comments but just to be annoyingly picky and pedantic, it was Karl Malden opposite Russell, not Klugman, though they're both the same stick-in-the-mud types. Can hardly wait to hear more. Hooray for BP!

Wow you are absolutely right. Klugman was in the stage production with Merman. Can't believe I made that mistake. Thanks for the correction.

Ok, I'm a little less exhausted so I'll post more now LOL I was REALLY happy they kept the overture in and it was obvious that the audience did too. The orchestra got a lot of applause lastnight! I still can't even say how blown away I was when Bernadette sang ROSE'S TURN....WOW!! Epseically at the end.....when Rose is making her bows to the "audience". I was bawling! She was wonderful in the rest of the show but I think she just needs to find the right balance for Rose and get more use to playing the role. Which I'm sure will come quickly to her. Its still REALLY shocks me how different she looked! I know she was supposed to look different but its just very strange seeing someone you know looking 20 years older than they normally do!! Donna, her sister, was there lastnight and I would have liked to have seen her reaction when she first saw Bernadette as Rose...but she was sitting behind us. Speaking of which, I also saw Arthur Laurents there and my friend bumped into Nicole Kidman after the show.

I'm just trying to envision Bernadette looking 20 years older than she is.....it must've been a total shock!!! All I can do is smile, if she was that incredible last night, I can't wait to see how magnificent she'll be in June when I go see to the show! I simply cannot wait
Honest to god, the suspense last night was killing me! I couldn't help but think about the show and wishing I was at the Shubert Theatre.....I'm sooooo happy to read these posts!! I love it!! Thank you all....muah!!!!

Yes, she does wear a wig. A rather dull blonde wig. I'm kind of glad that they have her wigged because it helps to forget she is Bernadette and concentrate on Rose. Those curls are just so "her". I'm hoping they might get a more attractive wig for her but it was more her costumes that made her look matronly. Someone on Talkin Broadway who went to the invited dress said there was an announcement that some of the costumes weren't finsihed so hopefully they will give her some more attractive clothes. If she is supposed to be this very sexy and seductive Rose, they need to dress her that way. Lord knows they have the good there. :-)

How great are the chances of some of these suggestions being heard and possibly changed? Are costumes, wigs, sets, etc usually changed during previews, or are previews more for the actors to find their roles and for the directors and producers to tweak the show?

I am truly a happier person because of Bernadette Peters
