If Anon is correct and Bernadette has read for a role in the film - let's keep our fingers crossed that she gets whatever role she wants.
Tim Burton should make a pretty interesting film and reap all the comic darkness from the story but I do wonder what Johnny Depp will be like as Sweeney Todd. I would have loved to have seen Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce in the role, a great actor and singer but not the same box-office draw of course.
It is great that Sweeney Todd will be filmed in this neck of the woods, at Pinewood, especially if Bernadette is part of the cast. Being over here again might concentrate her mind on the fact that British Bernadette Peters fans can fill a large auditorium - like The Royal Festival Hall - any time she likes!
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

If they're casting someone around Meryl or Bernadette's age for Lovett, then they need to go younger than 50s for the title character.

Wasn't it only in the recent rivival that an emphasis was placed on Sweeney being young than Mrs. Lovett? I mean Angela and George seemed to be the same age in the show or gave that illusion.
On a logical perspective, if Sweeney has been gone 15 some-odd years, knew Mrs. Lovett before than and was married, it kinda seems than both him and Lovett would be in their late 40's, early 50's. I was just watching Sleepy Hollow (another Tim Burtin, Johnny Depp film) and was speaking to someone about how I hope they make Sweeney older than Johnny looks as he has a very youthful face on screen. I don't have any doubt that there won't be alot of make-up artistry used in this film considering the director which I feel might be a good choice.
(Sorry for the long post, I usually don't do this!)

| posted: 9/21/2006 at 2:10:56 PM ET Actually I think Landbury is a good 10 years older than Hearn/Cariou but I don't think they played this up on stage or cast it that way for a reason. It seems they used make-up to make Sweeney appear older. I had always thought about them being about the same age as well but apparently Sondheim (otherwise known as Noah's best friend ) wants Lovett to be older. Though I don't think its been reported how much older he wants her to be.
I just think Bernadette would look better than Meryl next to Depp. Meryl is beautiful in her own way but Johnny Depp and Bernadette are more traditionally attractive and in the same way. That probably doesn't make much sense in anyone's head but mine.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 9/21/2006 at 2:41:13 PM ET Since Sweeney Todd probably never existed anyway and since he is certainly not the original creation of any particular author (including Mr Sondheim) but rather a character created through the folk-lore of London's sewer culture of the 18th Century - surely he can be any age we want him to be?
Putting aside, for one moment, the wonderful and talented women who may (or may not be) in the running for the role of Mrs Lovett - the question is... can Johnny sing?

1) I think Mrs. L is supposed to be in late 40's--I attended a lecture with the Artistic Director of the Wolf Trap Opera Company and I think that's what she said--I think she said Sweeney is a bit younger
2) Scottie gets my weekly award for sheer
