On ABC Family tonight @8:00pm (EDT):

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride--Johnny Depp and H.B. Carter provide the voices, among others.

I plan on taping this and watching for clues as to how these folks might handle Sweeney Todd.

It's a cute movie. I really liked it.

One of the British weekend newspapers featured HBC and her upcoming role as Mrs Lovett.

Apparently she is very busy taking "voice lessons" . Does that mean she got the role without even being able to sing/?

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

Most if not all musical theater performers on Broadway continue to take voice lessons and they can sing. She might need to build up the strenght of her voice. Sondheim would certainly not approve someone that couldn't sing.

I've been weighting in on all that has been happening with this movie and believe it has great potential with the cast. Tim Burton has done great things in the past and from what I have read, it seems like he's taking a new approach to the film.

I question whether Sondheim has any casting approval rights.

I agree, Karen. Maybe Burton used him as an advisor but I doubt anyone had to be "approved" by Sondheim. It's Burton's movie. He makes the decisions with perhaps some influence from the producers/studio.

Your post gives food for thought and brings to mind the film "My Fair Lady" and how most people were shocked to find that the obvious choice, Julie Andrews, was over-looked in favour of the charming but non-singing Audrey Hepburn and the criticism that this casting decision generated. But now there are lots of people who would swear that Audrey was an inspired choice and actually brought another dimension to the role. I suppose the very same could be said for "The King and I" and the casting of the talented but vocally challenged Deborah Kerr as the governess.

Who knows? maybe HBC will surprise us all but perhaps it might be advisable to keep Marni Nixon on a retainer just in case...

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

I'm looking forward to it now, after being revived by my smelling salts. These three will certainly bring the crazy, if nothing else. Let the shooting begin!

More than likely old news to all of you good people here ... but I was reading an article about Sam Mendes today and learned that his company "Scamp Films" had bought the rights to Sweeney Todd - and how he, for the last couple of years, was the one who would probably direct the film. It was news to me anyway!

It is academic now but I wonder if he would have been inclined to cast the film rather differently?
