From: NYC | posted: 3/31/2006 at 9:52:37 PM ET I received an invitation because I bought tickets for the Children & Art concert for Sondheim's 75th birthday last year - it benefited the same organization that he founded.
This is the thing with charity events - unfortunately those of us who aren't wealthy can only dream - but at least it gives wealthy people incentive to part with lovely money for a good cause. If we're not going to tax them more, at least this gets them spread it around a little.

Gypsy1527, you have good intentions but it somehow doesn't seem like the type of event that they'd split the donation 20 ways to allow a bunch of giddy fans to attend.
I'll be hitting a local bank soon. Much easier getaway than a crowded Manhattan street.

From: London | posted: 4/1/2006 at 6:30:07 AM ET Just hypothetically here...if I were to go to this dinner surely Mr Sondheim and Ms Peters would think I was some pathetic loon who paid all that money just to hang out with them and be awkward!!! They'd probably just talk to each other, surely?!!!
ha! i'm just laughing at the image of me sitting at a table with the two of them. i honestly don't think I could think of a single APPROPRIATE comment I would have.
i don't think "i love you i love you i love you i love you" would go down too well and I couldn't make that one last a whole dinner.
they say bernadette's wonderful..........and she is

From: London | posted: 4/1/2006 at 5:26:23 PM ET but they are also surely too humble to think that you have to pay a huge sum for the privelidge of their company. I know that they are both brilliant but surely they feel a tad uncomfortable about this. I feel people angrily disagreeing coming on....

| posted: 4/1/2006 at 5:51:56 PM ET Jenny, it is for charity and I'm sure they have done these types of things a thousand times. I'm sure they aren't concentrating on the fact that people are spending this much money to spend dinner with them. They just probably concentrate on the fact that everyone has come together for a great cause.

Moljul didn't want y'all to find out about it, but the heist didn't go over so well...

I'm not sure what that avatar is from - found it while surfing - thought it was too cute.
