So in the Bernadette forum there was a bit of talk about being a vegetarian...do you guys care to discuss your personal views about this...maybe how you all take care of yourself? Maybe we could learn a few things from each other. lol

I give people credit who can do it. It seems very healthy. I actually wouldn't mind becoming a vegetarian for health reasons, but I've eaten meat for most of my life (lol I don't really count before I had teeth)
I would not, however, ever become a vegan.
I have tries being part vegetarian...like cutting out meat, but allowing fish and poultry. lol But I always fail.

I have been either vegetarian or semi vegetarian for 8 1/2 years. I started out hardcore veg (no meat, poultry, pork or seafood) then I started college and living on dorm food it didn't exactly work Now I am pretty much back but I eat fish or seafood about once a week or every two weeks and absolutely no red meat, pork or poultry. A couple of times I have tried to go vegan but it lasted like 3 days. It was very difficult just b/c most foods have some type of animal product like eggs or milk and you can't eat anything without reading the ingredients and restaurants are difficult too. I do it mainly for animal rights reasons but the health reasons are of course a benefit.

I'm a vegetarian strictly for moral reasons. I used to be vegan for a while, but now I'm okay with eating dairy and egg products. Though I don't usually eat dairy or eggs by themselves (because they make me sick), I don't mind eating them in other products.

It's a really easy "diet" to stick to, I find. I've been veggie since I was 9, and I'm now 20. It's a lot easier to be vegetarian now, I think, because there are so many restaurants and food companies that have embraced the idea. It's not as hard now to find fake meat and meals that taste GOOD.

Of course, the main key is to maintain a certain variety of foods and sometimes, that may mean taking vitamins. And still being in college and being a human being, that's not always the easiest thing to do. That's probably why a lot of people end up going back to meat. It's not necessarily easier to eat healthy with meat in your diet, but there's certainly the illusion of that.

Personally, even if I wanted to eat meat, I wouldn't be able to. Just thinking about the conditions in which the animals have to live is enough to make me sick. And I'm at the point in my life where if I did eat meat, my body would probably reject it.

Well Jarred, here are my thoughts. I am not a vegetarian, but I eat ONLY organic foods. I've toyed with the idea of becoming vegetarian, but Organic works great for me. I think it's all in preference. I don't eat meat unless it's completely organic. It would not be hard for me to become vegetarian, but it's not my choice not to. My best friend became Vegan to lose weight and become more healthy. I must say he hasn't lost hardly any weight. And I have many friends who are vegetarian. But everyone's body reacts differently to things. I think you need to figure out what works best for your body personally. But if anyone would like a very healthy diet and it consists of meat - go organic. It's wonderful. And I highly recommend it. It's so easy too - every grocery store here has an ogranic section. It's nice So there are my thoughts.

Skibabi- All food is organic, as it has carbon in it. But I know what you mean.

And you can be vegan and certainly still be an unhealthy individual. Same thing with vegetarian. If you don't exercise or don't count calories, you can still maintain your undesireable weight or even gain weight. Unfortunately. Hehe.

hehe - well with your definition yes, but with mine no

a (1) : of, relating to, or derived from living organisms (2) : of, relating to, yielding, or involving the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides

But we all know what i meant But your comment was very interesting b/c i never actually thought of it that way. hmmm. anyways, so that's the organic i was talking about

Skibabi-
I totally agree with you!! Organic is great!! I just starting eating mainly organic food products when my local grocery store started selling them. THE QUALITY is SO MUCH BETTER...the food actually seems to last LONGER and it seems to stay fresher too!! My favorite is the baby carrots---mmmmmmm...if I buy non organic they're usually dry and shriveled within a day...but the organic ones stay fresh and moist a lot longer.
Do you get actual organic meat--like beef, etc? I haven't run across any of that???

I knew the organic you're talking about. Just me being a nerd and having fun with words.

I'm pretty sure Skibabi wasn't talking about this but I'll throw it in there anyways. There are a lot of meat products that are called free range. Usually, you see it with eggs and chickens, I think. And basically the idea is that the animals are free to roam around and don't live in the same type of things that other animals live in. But the odd thing here is that free range meat isn't always healthier or better or less cruel to animals because the companies that do free range aren't subject to the same standards as non-free range meat.

It just depends on the company, I guess.

I was a vegetarian for about four years...I think I started in seventh grade and gave it up last summer, or something like that. Anyway, I didn't do it for health reasons, I did it because I couldn't stand to eat an animal that had been kept in such bad conditions. Plus I was young, and I was like, aw, I don't want to eat this fluffy little chicken, or whatever. I gave it up, though, because I wasn't making up for the vitamins and protein that I should have been getting from the meat.

I still don't eat a lot of meat, but I don't know if I'd ever go back to veggie even if I did take the responsibility to supplement what I was missing in my diet. But I totally respect people who can hang onto it long term...it just wasn't for me, I guess. Plus, part of my motivation in sticking with it for years was because everyone said it was just a phase and I wouldn't last very long. I have this thing about doing something because people say I can't...but that's another story...

I strongly believe that being a vegetarian is healthier. I've been a vegetarian all my life. I could eat meat if I wanted, but I've never had the desire to. Aside from the health issue, it sickens me that animals are slaughtered so humans can eat them.
