Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 8/26/2003 at 7:57:01 PM ET Well, I've heard that they've already hired someone for one(or more) of the child roles (won't say which one(s) yet) and that they're supposed to start either at the end of September/eary October.
The casting notice really has nothing to do with the kids only being able to work a certain amount of hours. These kids do not generally work over the allowed time they're permitted to work. If they did they'd have alternates for their roles.
The children really only miss one day of school, Wednesdays, because it is a matinee day. Most Broadway companies will only provide a tutor during rehearsal period or when the kidsĀ are missing a significant amount of school....other wise they can get their own tutor, be homeschooled or..... I know that several kids on Broadway go to either PPS(Professional Performing Arts School) or PCS (Professional Children's School) which will accommodate their working hours. Some kids on Broadway have even been lucky enough to get accommodations with their public school (like to go in later on certain days or to leave earlier on others). Once a child turns 16 they do not have to have a wrangler anymore and can have more liberal hours and scenes.
For example, I'm not saying that Molly Ephraim didn't deserve the part in the Into the Woods revival (because I thought she was a great Little Red!) but I do know that her age played a factor in her getting cast because she was 15, about to turn 16 when she was hired for Broadway. So she was only required to have the wrangler for a few months in the run. I do know that she auditioned with kids just as talented as her but also a few years younger.
As far as GYPSY is concerned, Bernadette isn't that tall so they have to keep that in mind with these kids. I know several kids who auditioned the first time around and that was one of the first things assessed when they went into the audition (their height). The kids do get measured regularly.

From: New York City | posted: 8/26/2003 at 9:22:54 PM ET That is so funny, because when I was looking at a picture the other day (from the CD signing) of Bernadette and the kids, I remember thinking.... That Addison Timlin is getting pretty tall. Which meant my next question was going to be: how often do they plan on replacing the children, given that nearly all of them are at an age where they grow a signifigant amount in a short period? But this has pretty much answered the question. Thanks, bwaybaby! I'm guessing it would be about every 4-6 months, depending on the growth rate.
But it seemed to me that Baby June is still relatively tiny (probably due to, in part, all the gynmastics training she has -- over-athleticism tends to stunt growth a bit.)
So when I go in October all the kids will have been recast, you think?

Regis: And look at all this hair. My God. That's a lot of hair. Look at this. How does hair get this way?
Bernadette: Um.. it sort of grew out of my head like this.
