| posted: 7/6/2003 at 12:54:05 PM ET It was just posted on All That Chat that Bernadette's appearance on the Ed Sullivan show will be on TV this Saturday. The channel seems to be a local (NYC) PBS station but I thought some of you might be interested.

She reminds me of a little girl dressed up to look like one of the Lennon Sisters (not sure how many of you remember them). She also looks like someone told her right before she went on "Don't forget to keep smiling for the camera". It's just so darn sweet.

From: New York City | posted: 7/7/2003 at 6:03:35 PM ET LOL! She did that wierd "smiley" thing a lot in her younger days. For instance... I've got a taped version of one her 1980's concerts (VERY early 1980s, way before Song and Dance and Into the Woods) and she looked so much less comfortable on stage than she does now. There were times (as I was watching) where I felt like calling into the TV, "breathe, Bernadette. Just take one deep breath, and be yourself, for goodness sakes." She's still an extraordinary performer and singer but... She just... well, she was doing this "placid smile at the camera" thing the whole time, and her voice (during rare speaking instances) had that same monotone, hypnotic quality, and it seemed very different than how she is in front of a crowd now.
It's really interesting how performers evolve. If I were to put my 1980's concert up against the recent one at Carnegie Hall, the Carnegie Hall concert would win, hands down. Bernadette's so natural and comfortable now, and she jokes more with the audience. You don't feel like pouring her a good stiff drink after watching her perform anymore.
