Having purchased my front-row tickets the day they went on public sale, DELIBERATELY for a performance precisely two months into the run...Bernadette, and the entire production, exceeded all of my expectations. Bernadette so completely inhabits the role that there were times when I was literally stunned by her. I have seen GYPSY many, many times over the years--including, of course, Tyne Daly, and more than a dozen regional productions, as well as the 1962 film and the Bette Midler TV movie. The Ethel Merman cast album has been a "Desert island Disc" for me for much of my life--and I have enjoyed the other CDs as well (just for the record, by my count, the Bernadette version will mark the SIXTH recording of GYPSY)--I know this show backwards and forwards, and I love it above all other musicals. But Bernadette's performance was nothing short of a REVELATION. The entire production is, in my opinion, definitive--with Bernadette's powerhouse, heart-stopping, ferocious Rose the best of all. My partner had never, ever seen GYPSY in any form--and he was mightily impressed. When we spoke to Bernadette after the performance, he told her he had never seen it, and she seemed surprised. She said, "You have never seen it?", and after he told her again that this was his first, she said, "Isn't it wonderful?". She was humble and gracious, and her beauty luminous. What a treasure she is. I could go on and on, but I will not...it was just wonderful. If there is anyone who posts regularly on here who has not seen it, no matter where you live--save the $, and get to NY to see this briliiant revival of the greatest of all musicals--and the stunning performance of our greatest musical theatre star which is its center.

Did you ever see Angela Lansbury in the role? I would love to know what you thought were the major differences in Bernadette's (and the show in general) performance compared to the ones you have seen?
This production of Gypsy was the first one I have seen live (I did see the movies), so unfourtunately (maybe it's a good thing) I really don't have anything to comapre/contrast it with.
