So here would be the perfect scenario: BP sings Rose's Turn, finishes, there's a moment of stunned silence and then the audience erupts into thunderous applause... I can see it all now. :-)

I don't know. It is definitely one of the highlights of the show though, so can't argue there. Anyone know who gets to choose these things?

Registered: 6/4/2001 | posted: 5/29/2003 at 6:52:43 AM ET Who gets to chose: I assume that the people who run the Tony broadcast give each show time, like 5 minutes. I suppose the Tony-TV people might request a particular song or medley, but I don't know how much say they have. Then I would guess the producers and director (of the Broadway-not TV-show) decide, although probably with a star like Bernadette she most likely would have some say. (If I were her lawyer, there would be something in her contract saying that she has the right to participate in the decision (something like right of first refusal at least) along with the usual fee stuff.)
edit (9:20 and awake):
My first thought for the Tonys was Roses Turn, but after reading much discussion about it, changed my mind. Now I'm back, thinking that it's a great showcase for Bernadette, and I'm sure they can stage it so that it makes sense (here's hoping).

| posted: 5/29/2003 at 11:04:23 AM ET My first reaction is strange choice too. But I think it is definitely the right choice. I'm not sure all that many people are worried about spoiling the show. So many people know it already and kind of know how it ends. And if you have never seen it, that one number taken out of context won't really give you the whole story at least if they don't bring Louise out at the end.
Also, a great deal of the Tonys is bringing in business for the show. They need to showcase their star and all of her "powers". Let's face it, people don't come to the show to see the story of Gypsy, they are coming to see Bernadette Peters in Gypsy. They need to see her on the Tonys and say "Wow she must be a fantastic Rose if that is her Rose's Turn, let's buy tickets." I think I remember hearing that the Tony producers just give a time limit and it is really up to the producers of the show to decide what song to do. It is a shame that Tammy and John can't be shown as well but Gypsy is a star vehicle so it is probably correct to allow the star to do her blow the roof off the theater number.

| posted: 5/29/2003 at 2:07:02 PM ET yeah, that would have been great but I'm thinking Rose's Turn might come off better out of context on the show. A couple of years ago, Faith Prince did a number on the Tonys form Bells Are Ringin that was a great number in the show but just didn't translate well on the Radio City stage. I'm thinking Coming up Roses might do the same. I think the effect of the song has a great deal to do with many of the scenes before it building the momentum. Rose's Turn can stand on its on a bit more. JMHO.
