THEATER REVIEW | 'GYPSY'
New Momma Takes Charge
By BEN BRANTLEY
Working against type and expectation, Bernadette Peters
delivered the surprise coup of many a Broadway season in
the revival of "Gypsy" at the Shubert Theater.

"the gentle, passive man whom she recruits to manage her daughters' act. You actually think, as you wouldn't have dared with Merman, that they must have a very pleasurable sex life."

LOL I could have gone without that image.

Yes, but it is so important. My problem with other Gypsy's I have seen is that I have never bought Rose and Herbie as a couple. The show requires them to hook up almost immediately. If you don't sense an immediate fire then they come off more as potential friends with a lot in common. And there has to be a reason Herbie sticks around for so many years. We aren't talking about a year or two. Obviously he can't be in it just for the act. He has to really love Rose which means they need to be having a true, full relationship. To quote Gypsy: "To put it in vulgar terms", if they aren't getting it on on a fairly regular basis, he would have walked out when it was still Baby June headlining. Without sex and chemistry, Herbie sticking around would be very unrealistic.
