Well, I just got home from Gypsy not too long ago and it was AMAZING!! The alley was just buzzing even an hour before curtain. I think about 90% of the people there knew eachother. It was so great seeing so many people I knew and so many familiar faces all in one place. You could sense the excitement. You knew that on a whole it wasn't people there to judge or criticize the show or Bernadette. They were all there to show they're support...which is really what I think makes opening nights so special. So many people were saying how there hasn't been an opening night like this in years!

Before the curtain went up Mayor Bloomberg came onstage and proclaimed that May 1st would be "Curtain Up On Gypsy Day". And then Ron( one of the producers) got up and made a little speech that was actually very funny...he ended with " Mr Conductor.....if you please!" LOL!

The overture got a rousing applause everytime they'd go into a new song. Every actor pretty much got a pretty big applause when they came out. Bernadette's voice was at its strongest. She was FULL of energy as was the rest of the cast. I could tell how much she was truly enjoying herself up there and making the most of it.And for this to be such a BIG night for her...she didn't seem nervous at all! I don't think I have ever heard Bernadette sing Some People better than tonight!! I love the finished costumes and the drops and set rearrangements( except for the train station...it doesn't look like a train station anymore....).The lamb got HUGE. Poor Tammy could hardly hold on to it!

I can definitely sense MUCH better chemistry between John & Bernadette than when the show began previews which made Small World and You'll Never Get Away From Me all that much better!!! And I actually felt John was a much more palpable Herbie tonight! Tammy really shined! I've heard many people say that she's seemed nervous when they saw her in previews....however, I never sensed that. I think maybe people were picking up more on her characters nervousness and shyness. Mayor Bloomberg was sitting down the aisle from me and I could see a big grin on his face when Louise was "transforming" into Gypsy Rose Lee LOL ( I don't mean that in a bad way...just that he really seemed to be enjoying the show). There were a few moments when some of the cast ( John and Louise) almost broke character looking like they were ready to laugh.

Gotta Get A Gimmick just gets better and better!! Especially Kate Buddeke...she is loaded with energy and just brings SO much fun into the show!! And the audience totally ate it up!! All three woman are so wonderful in that!! I just LOVE when Julie Halston( Electra) throws the audience this smile after telling Gypsy that she is younger than her when she started stripping! That got a LOT of laughs( more so than usual). Heather Lee is flawless in all of her line deliveries, she has terrific comedic timing and I just love the laugh she does! I thought the confrontation scene between Rose and Gypsy was stronger than ever too...Bernadette was really letting it out!

And last but not least Rose's Turn....amazing amazing amazing!!! She hit every word, every note, every nuance, every emotion perfectly!! And I was so happy that this time, eventhough Louise entered before the audience stopped clapping , Bernadette did not acknowledge her until after a few more bows --and then Gypsy started clapping....it definitely makes that directing decision easier for the audience to get!

I don't really think it matters what the critics say.I've seen the audiences reaction to the show and tonight was no different...its definitely a hit!( even with Danny, I think, why else would he keep going back??) The cast and crew should feel extremely proud of this production!

It was a great evening. I found it very funny when she dropped the plaque at the end of Some People. It just fell right out of her hand when she was getting ready to put it in her bag.

Yeah, she hads the funniest expression on her face when she dropped it too! I don't think it so much as fell out of her hands..I think she just aimed wrong and missed the bag and that they lights went down a little too quickly.

Amazing is the only word to describe last night's performance!
That was my fourth time seeing Gypsy, and I can honestly say (as much as I love the show and Bernadette) that she has never sounded better in her life! She was not nervouse at all, and she was having a great time up there...which showed.

The cast had so much chemisrty with each other; more than before. Especially Rose and her father. That scene has shaped up tremendously.

Kate (Mazeppa) added a few facial expressios and little noises and "Yeah's!" here and there which made her character even more memorable than before. She is terrific...as are all 3 stippers.

LOL Andrea Martin was there, which made me wonder what she thought of Miss. Cratchet (a role she played in the TV version of the movie). I wonder if Bette Midler was there; I doubt it.

Well, anyway, I had mentioned a few weeks back that when I saw Annie Get Your Gun for the first time (at the first preview) I knew at that moment Bernadette would win the Tony; but that I hadn't felt that way about her Rose. Well, last night changed my mind! Not only do I think she will win the Tony, but she deserves it! She worked incredibly hard to morph into Rose, and last night she finally broke the mold and made it her own. Even the NY Times was raving about how she has surpassed Lansbury, Daly, Russell, and Midler (who all stayed in the Merman mannerisms) and has created a new Rose.

LOL The dog has also learned his cues. Bernadette said that he is so cute because he knows when to jump into someone else's arms, and who's arms he has to jump in to. She told us that before hand, so I watched for it during last night's show...and he really does know his cues! It's precious!

What a spectacular performance. I know that no matter how many times I see the show in the future, last night's performance shall forever stay in my memory. I was witness to theater history last night, and I am honored.

it sounds like quite a night. i wish i was there to see it first hand, but these write ups were great to read. thanks to you all for posting them. i, too, was so pleased to read the new york times review. ben brantly LOVED it! that never happens, i think i've read maybe one or two other things that he didn't bash ANYHTING about the show. that in itself speaks volumes.

if you dont mind me asking, christine, how did bernadette tell you before hand? are you personal friends with her or something? b/c if you are COOL!

I'd love to see Coco's understudy go on! Gee, do you think a lot of people would be asking for refunds then?? Just kidding hehe....they're both soooo adorable though! I totally think they should have the dog(s) and the lamb come out during curtain call...although I can see how leaving earlier is easier for Bill and his wife. Both dogs looked sooo adorable with the little pins in their fur lastnight!

No, I'm not personal friends with her. A friend of mine introduced me to her a while back, and therefore I have spoken to her on occasion.

I wish they would bring them out for curtain call as well; and I cannot believe how big the lamb has gotten!
