Good Point, Anonymous. She does seem to get strong reactions one way or another. I think it is interesting to hear these different opinions but I take it all with a grain of salt.

Christine, I'm not sure how much you read ATC but Bernadette is not held in high regard by a lot of people there. Those strong feelings again. She has been bashed by a few very vocal posters there since it was announced she would do the show in London! There are also several fans of BP's but they seem to be less vocal. But rest assured, there are a few of us over there defending an actress'e right to have her preview period before she is condemned. But yes, if it is a post from Danny, the show (whatever it is) will be bashed and rather brutally so.

I don't read it everyday, but I try to read it as much as possible. I can see Bernadette is not very liked over there. I have been trying for a while to post on there, but they don't like to approve AOL accounts for some reason.

At least there are people like you trying to give her the credit she deserves.

well if you go down the page a bit and see the review of the first preview you can see some kinder and more constructive and supportive reviews. The problem with ATC is that the posts eventually disappear. But that means Danny's will too. LOL

There is something about AOL that causes problems though I'm not sure what. It is an interesting board to read. And in response to someone else's question about the creative folks at Gypsy making some of the suggested changes. I'm not sure if they read this board but they do read ATC and many of the changes discussed over there will be taken under consideration by the producers and director.

First, what is the link to ATC?

And, I saw Gypsy the first preview and absolutely loved it! Of course, I'm one of those people who loves Bernadette no matter what.

I think part of the problem is though, that this show was talked about for months. Rehearsals themselves were about 3 months long (not sure the exact time). Sam Mendes is a HUGE director directing BERNADETTE PETERS in GYPSY. There is a reason for the caps. This is a huge show with a huge star and a huge director. The public is probably thinking that the show will be inhumanly perfect the first time it occurs on stage. PEOPLE HAVE GOT TO GIVE THE WOMAN A BREAK!! This was her 1st Broadway show in two years and it was her first preview. Who wouldn't be nervous? And some of the things that people don't like, aren't really even her fault. Like someone said, "Rose's Turn" and other songs lacked choreography but the singing and acting on her part were fantastic. Please remember, that the real Rose was indeed quite similar to Bernadette. I think people are used to seeing Rose portrayed by belting women. Lastly, have faith in her. Opening Night will blow us all away I know it. Once she really gets into the character and has had time to perform and prepare her voice it will be wonderful.

As for the BP thing, I concur with Jenny, it's just an affectionate fan's nickname to use occasionally--not disrespectful at all, and sometimes you just want to vary your writing a bit and not repeat the same words so you use an alternate name. Another thing that you all are discussing has got me wondering. Is it my imagination or is ATC starting to attract a tackier crowd of people lately? I used to really enjoy it and feel like I was learning a lot but in the last couple of months the level of intelligence and civility seems to be plummeting. Some of the old regulars don't post as much and a bunch of the newcomers come across as just plain childish and vicious. Going there can be very demoralizing these days, and I'm referring to topics other than Gypsy or Bernadette. Any thoughts, agreeing or diagreeing?

Karen,
I completely agree with you. I find it very unsettling to even visit that message board. People are entirely childish and vindictive. I think it's utterly ridiculous the way people are behaving on ATC. It seems as if there is quite a large group of people that have nothing better to do than to gripe and tear apart productions (especially as of late). The level of respect and intelligence has plummeted to a despicable level....not to mention the level of class. Just my thoughts.

i am also one of those who love bernadette no matter what. and i have to say that i did not like what that danny character had to say.

"She never seems to hit the correct emotion at the correct pitch." ok, a little information for those who don't already know: this is ACTING. there is no correct nor incorrect. it is what comes from a person at a given moment and every single time you do something as an actor it changes because you change as well as the variables around you. to say he didn't like what he saw is more than valid, however, to say that it was "not correct" is simply maddening! who are you, mr. danny, to say what is the correct way or not? if you think you're so versed, then get up and do it yourself!!!

sorry about that, but i had to say it. as for people either loving her or hating her, i think it's wonderful to be able to evoke such strong reactions . wouldn't it be better to be absolutely hated for who you are rather than people being indifferent to you? i think so. this just goes to show how WONDERFUL bernadette truly is!

As for the "BP" comment...I still find it very disrespectful...would any of you ever say that to her face? You guys have no idea who possibly reads this board....
And in MOST cases when I see people using it,its more of a time saver( and people even admit this) than an "affectionate nickname". I'm still old school about calling your elders Mr or Ms. I find it very charming when people refer to her as Ms. Peters.I'm sure she's gotten use to being referred to as "BP" after all these years but that doesn't make it any less disrespectful. Just my two cents

I have to admit that when i use BP it is because i am being lazy, but I never ever intend to be disrespectful. But i agree with Bwaybaby we may show disrespect even if we do not intend it. I will refrain from using BP from here on out.

I don't see anything wrong with using BP in referring to her. It's not like we are addresses her as that. My family when discussing me in a letter or e-mail will for space and time sense refer to me as my initals. But they do not call me by my intials. Many people sign letters and such with their intials. So I, for one, will probably continue to refer to her as BP sometimes.

Oh, I forgot to add... Desmondsdesire-- about Bernadette's voice and stamina( or according to you...lack thereof) she's been working VERY hard these past 4 months!! Especially now that they're in previews. She is exhausted and she still needs time physically and vocally to get used to doing 8 shows a week again( 9 shows this week!!). So many people underestimate how much HARD work goes into being in a Broadway show!( both on stage and behind-the-scenes) Its not all fun and games! I don't know about most successful Broadway peformers( and by that I mean..those that are mostly known for their stage work)but Bernadette definately works more than the 2 and 1/2 hours(or more depending if its a matineee day) than most people think. She's definately one of the hardest working people in this business!! We're talking about a women who sang through 2 concerts in a row with laryngitis because she didn't want to disappoint her fans by canceling.

It may be a time saver, but it's still disrespectful. I mean, I sign my posts with my initials, but that's because I use my actual name in my user name. I don't expect or want people to refer to me as my initals.
I don't know, I find it more natural to type out Bernadette, and I don't see it as a waste of time. Same thing with people typing "MTM" as opposed to Mary Tyler Moore. If you don't want to type her entire name, then refer to her as Mary (I guess); most people will know who you're talking about. MTM is not her name!

*Sorry, didn't mean to have a fit; it's just one of those pet peeves of mine, and since Cindy brought it up I was finally able to address it.

i would happily call her Bernadette more often but I jsut feel it sounds like I really know her and I thought that was a bit rude - just assuming it was ok to use her first name. also, this is an internet site - everything is abrieviated for convienience and speed. nothing personal but if you are on a role, her name is quite long to type.

they say bernadette's wonderful..........and she is

Gosh, you learn something new every day. I had absolutely no idea that "BP" was considered disrespectful or that it bothered anyone, but now that I know, I'll cease and desist.
