Colleen, you have to get this DVD and see Bernadette perform "Being Alive" and "Unexpected Song" ... not to mention a rather unusual and fun "Broadway Baby".

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 3/15/2007 at 5:11:49 PM ET moljul, your "Alice" quote is really interesting. It has always baffled me why Woody Allen has never really used Bernadette in any of his NY films. She was great in "Alice" but the part was so tiny. I think she would be amazing in a more substantial role in one of his films. She was born for it.

In the NY Times review they list off all the famous actors who made cameos but Bernadette was the only one who got special mention. That anyone who is known for being so sweet can so perfectly delivery a line like "Yeah, very deep is exactly where is wants to put it", is priceless.
I do LOVE the "bored student adviser" line.

| posted: 3/15/2007 at 5:53:08 PM ET Ah yes, Scottie, I should have mentioned that as well. Any time your muse needs reading glasses and pulls them out of her dress bodice, you know you are in a Woody Allen film. I have to say I also love they way she sits on the chaise lounge. One leg up, one leg down, very un-ladylike and just so perfect for the character.

I so agree! The time was just right for a Gypsy revival here and it would have been wonderful if Bernadette's "Rose" had been seen by a wider audience. But even if Gypsy had made it to London it would have been staged at the National Theatre on the South Bank and not in the West End.
It would be great to have Bernadette appear in a West End show. She really should have at least one West End appearance under her belt by now. Not to mention the odd Olivier Award as well.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 3/19/2007 at 4:33:34 PM ET That was the big buzz here at the time Mendes was given directorship of the Broadway revival.
The word was Gypsy was going to open here in London at the NT before it opened on Broadway ... with Bernadette on board.
