From today's Barnstable (Massachusetts) Patriot newspaper:
"Although the Hyannis concert is nearly sold out, the orchestra [Boston Pops] will be on Nantucket Aug. 12 for a show at Jetties Beach with the knockout interpreter of the great American musicals, Bernadette Peters.
“She is just a stunning performer,” [Keith]Lockhart said. “She’s gorgeous, her voice sounds incredible. They don’t make them like that anymore.” "

I am lucky enough to have a friend with a summer house on Martha's Vineyard, so this tied into my vacation plans perfectly.  They opened the beach up about 3 hours before the show began, and soon after, Bernadette showed up to do a brief soundcheck. She was in that yellow sundress she's worn a few times recently. She sang a little of No One Is Alone, then said something like, "now let me try it in these shoes" and proceeded to change shoes and practice walking down the stairs into the audience again. The first half of the show consisted of the Pops playing 4 or 5 songs, then there was a brief intermission before they played There's No Business Like Show Business to introduce Bernadette. She wore a glittery gold gown (the children in front of us kept referring to her as "the mermaid") which I believe we've also seen before. I may be leaving out a few songs but the song list went something like this..
Let Me Entertain You
No One Is Alone
There is Nothing Like A Dame
Fever
Not A Day Goes By
Being Alive
Count Your Blessings
The crowd seemed to especially love There Is Nothing Like A Dame and Fever. She sounded great and her banter between songs was similar to what it's been at other concerts. She said it was her first time on Nantucket and that she was going to get "crantucket ice cream" after.
It's great that such a huge number of people were able to see her perform. (The security guards had estimated 9,000) We went out to a couple bars after and a suprisingly large percentage of people (and not all your typical theater buff) were talking about the concert and how great it and Bernadette were. Add a gorgeous sunset, perfect weather, and a fireworks display, and it was basically a perfect night.

She must like that place. At her 2005 Boston concert she mentioned that she had shopped for clothes there the day before and had eaten dinner in the restaurant. She jokingly mispronounced the name as "Lew-iss" and when everyone laughed she said "What?...Isn't that right?"

The concert was great! Bernadette looked amazing and her voice was amazing as well! it was an absolutely gorgeous day to have an outdoor concert on a beach. It could not have been better!
