It's just gossip, folks, but this starts it:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/07192005/gossip/liz.htm

"First Wives Club" --the musical, according to Liz Smith in the New York Post:

"Casting? Lambert has his eye on Queen Latifah, Bernadette Peters, Megan Mullally, Stockard Channing (remember, in the movie she jumped off her balcony, bringing the three friends together for the funeral.) He would also enjoy luring Olivia Newton-John back to the spotlight! And might I suggest Meryl Streep? She began in musical theater, and has a hell of a voice. People who see "Postcards from the Edge" for the first time, still gasp when she belts, "I'm checking out of this Heartbreak Hotel."

I repeat--this is GOSSIP.

"Resonant franchise story" and "found a great formula" are not phrases that I find inspiring.

Well, since this is Liz Smith and since there have been many casting rumors and almost-happeneds (Guys and Dolls revival, Chicago revival, Kiss Me Kate workshop, The Kander/Ebb Skin of Our Teeth musical, which had a reading, the London Passion, the London Gypsy...), I won't hold my breath!

I would love to see Bernadette play either the Diane Keaton character or the Goldie Hawn character.

Oh, I would definitely see her in the Goldie Hawn character more than the other two.

see the Goldie Hawn character would be the obvious casting for Bernadette, but I think it would be much more of a challenge for her to play the Bette Midler character, Brenda. She'd have to put on a few pounds... although since it's the stage, maybe she could just wear a fat suit. Anyways, I don't see this coming true in the slightest... fun to make believe though!!!
