Okay, let's play a game. I was watching THE OUT OF TOWNERS (Starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn) and thought to myself, "how amazing would it have been if Bernadette Peters was playing Goldie's role ("Nancy"). What movie roles do you wish Bernadette had been cast in?

Well, according to the book The Nashville Chronicles by Jan Stuart, Bernadette turned down the Barbara Harris role in Altman's "Nashville." I suppose the filming conflicted with Mack and Mabel, and she chose the latter. Harris was brilliant, but the thought of Bernadette in the part is certainly intriguing.

WAsn't there some talk of Bernadette playing Rose's mother in Titanic. She'd have been brilliant -she'd have brought so much more to the role.
Hmmm...I'd have liked her to have had a guest part in Friends as Joey's leading lady in a broadway musical and he falls in love with her or something. That would have been great. Ooooh! and then while the end credits are rolling she could be doing scales with phoebe. I'd also like her to be in the simpsons as herself of course. perhaps she could be one of lisa's heroines and the family see her in a show in a vein attempt to bring a little culture into their lives. Bernadette would look good with yellow skin!

they say bernadette's wonderful..........and she is

There's only one role for her in my mind: Margo Channing, All About Eve.

Chew that scenery. Yum.

Ok...not a movie role but I still want to see her on Law and Order (regular or SVU only) as a bad girl...not a victim.

Oh...and can we PLEASE have her guest hosting with Regis soon??!?!?!?!? I am beginning to suffer symptoms of withdrawl...must break out tapes of old shows I guess.

Jean, would Kristin Chenoweth be Eve Harrington?

One more and then I'm off: I read a short interview done in late 1998 (?) with her where she said that she might be a recurring character on the 1999 or so Tom Selleck tv show, The Closer; I would have liked that.

Second the guest hostess with Regis--even with Kelly would be ok.

I'm still thinking on the bad girl scenario.

Karen: oh my God, I was trying to think of who might be Eve, someone fun but deadly, who could give Margo/Bernadette a run for her money.

BINGO!

Tracey Ullman is one of my favorites, but two of her parts that Bernadette might have been even better in, are Woody Allen's wife in "Small Time Crooks" and Kevin Kline's wife in "I Love You to Death." "Small Time Crooks" would have put her back being attracted to a Hugh Grant character.

How about a revival of Applause, the musical version of All About Eve?

Is it wrong of me to think of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? With Patti LuPone undergoing torment at the hands of a deranged, bitter, alcoholic former child star Bernadette?

And yes,I do know that Patti is younger.

What's for dinner,Jane?

Oh no! Not Baby Jane Hudson. The next thing someone will suggest is Bernadette as Helen Lawson in a remake of Valley of the Dolls. Those movies are fun to sit around and watch late at night, but I would hope that no one tries to bring them back in either straight form or musicalized. Actually, I think there is a musical version of Baby Jane out there, but I heard it was terrible. My point is that they're too junky to bother with, and you really can't redo the camp quality--it's too fleeting.
As a joke fantasy Bernadette as Baby Jane is funny, but I would dread it if someone tried to make it a reality.

Karen-
I was kidding. It's just a game thread. I know it's a freaky camp movie. I would hope that no one remakes Baby Jane or All About Eve.

Oh, I know. I completely understood and saw exactly what you meant. I thought your post was very funny and spot-on. It's just that then I ended up inspired to go off on a serious tangent. I'm just weird that way.
