For anyone who hasn't caught this flick yet.......PLOT wise, you're not missing much at all....however Bernadette is great in her role.....I guess it must have been a big deal for her to be in the movie because on the box, at the beginning credits and end credits it always read:

and Bernadette Peters
(in the MAIN list of characters)

Some People....

"Would you like your pen back?"
-Bernadette Peters

Actually I think that this is a great movie! I really think it's a good wholesome plot and Bernadette is fabulous in it! I bought it for my parents for Christmas and they adored it! I don't know why everyone insists that the plot is so bad. It's a family film guys!

Hey Anon - So you thought that the sex in the kitchen scene and the drug scenes were wholesome family plots?

i thought it was a good movie. Bernadette was fabulous in her role... as she always is. the movie plot is not horrible. it's just a different storyline that most people are used to in how the plot is conjured up, ya know what i mean?

I thought it was a decent movie. Of course, I wish Bernadette had had a bigger role, but she still gave everything to becoming her character. The plot isn't the best thing in the world - and maybe the whole thing would have been better with a couple more revisions to the screenplay. But it wasn't horrible by any means.

A family film? Well, maybe if your family didn't have any young children. That said, would I watch it with my family? Absolutely not.

I thought this a mediocre movie at best, but thought Bernadette was great, and bought a copy of the DVD just for her scenes.
There are a few nice scenes here and there, but I thought the story poor and, to be honest, I found Cameron Douglas, or his character, really obnoxious, jerky and a slob. I always skip his scenes.

"Reminding us how underemployed she's been, Bernadette Peters plays Alex's psychologist wife, Rebecca..." -- Chicago Tribune reviewer.
That was my feeling about the role. Reminds me every time that I'd love for her to get a really good dramatic film role -- and soon!!! -- to fully display her acting range.

My favorite part, really, is the director's comments on the DVD in which he says he loves Bernadette and that his wife, knowing that, came on the set to keep an eye on him.

"She brings such a joyous quality to anything she does."

BERNADETTE PETERS AS MRS. LOVETT IN THE SOON TO BE FILMED SCREEN ADAPTION OF SWEENEY TODD!

I really thought this film with the Douglas' would be a springboard to more high profile film roles. She just never seems to get offered the good ones in the high profile pieces. I think if someone just gave her the chance in a WELL WRITTEN fantastic part and didn't concentrate so much on her box office draw that she would knock everyone's socks off and do more film work.

Sadly It Runs in the Family tanked at the box office so that spring board never happened. Though I think she probably got the best reviews of all the cast.

I wasn't a huge fan of Cameron Douglas' character either, but at least he can sort of act.

I think we can all agree that Bernadette deserves the best roles out there. In film, she hasn't gotten a lot of that. A lot of her films leave something to be desired in terms of plot line. IRITF is an example of that. But it's not so horrible that I wouldn't ever watch it again.

I don't know why but I think she would be great as a professor in one of the Harry Potter movies, and THAT would get her TONS of attention for more film roles!

You either got it, or you aint!

As far as appearing in Harry Potter movies - it couldn't ever happen because JK Rowling as a "Britons only" rule for British characters. So unless she writes an American professor, Bernadette couldn't be involved. Though I do think she could play a fantastic Umbridge.

Anyways, I also thought that maybe this role would have gotten her more notice...but the film tanked.
