Both performances excellent. Nothing about her b-day at the matinee that I saw or heard.
By the way, the lamb at the matinee was particularly active...was biting Tammy's hair & had her laughing during the song. He/she was better behaved in the evening.
After the evening curtain call marvin & crew played happy birthday while the cast & audience sang. One of the little male kids in the show must have the same b-day as Bernadette went over and grabbed him & brought him center stage. She was presented flowers, and I bet they were roses.
Once the curtain closed you could hear the cast whooping and hollering & it sounded like they were Singing "Happy Trails" as one person said.
Folks at the stage door also sang happy birthday to Bernadette when she appeared. It looked like she rec'd a fair number of cards, gifts, flowers from folks. She patiently signed and posed for pictures then went back into the theatre. There was no car waiting for her as far as I could tell.

| posted: 2/29/2004 at 5:09:16 PM ET I had the best time last night at Gypsy with my mom! As soon as Bernadette came down the aisle and said sing out Louise the show stopped for a few minutes with applause! I had never seen it last that long the past two times I saw Gypsy. I could definitely tell that everyone was having a lot of fun with the show. Especially during Mr. Goldstone, I was hysterical at that! The lamb was so cute, it was very active and looked like it was licking Tammy's face. For the most part the show was amazing as usual and I thought the audience loved it as well lots of screaming people, me including. (The lady in front of me screamed at me about her ear drums during curtain call! I felt bad but of course I'm going to scream for Bernadette and even louder because it was her birthday!) After Rose's Turn the entire theatre jumped to their feet! It was the fast standing ovation I ever saw and was also a pretty long applause. I enjoyed getting to sing happy birthday during the curtain call she was sooooooo happy and I was thrilled to be apart of it. At the stage door everyone sang happy birthday and she seemed really touched! She started blowing kisses and she stayed to sign autographs for quite a long time. I stayed the whole time she was there cause I stayed over at the marriot marquee. I was freezing but it was soooooo worth it in the end! I had dropped off flowers and a card before the show and she said she got them but I kind of wish I had held on to them to giver her cause a lot of people had things to give her. She said she knew which where the once I got for her. I found the best birthday card that kept going on and on about Some People and how they will never be as amazing as you. She told me she loved it so I got really excited! Then she went back in the stage door once everyone else left probably to get ready for her birthday party! I would have LOVED to go to that but by the end of the night I was pretty tired. Sorry about my novel here but it was just thrilling!

Registered: 8/14/2003 | posted: 2/29/2004 at 5:46:39 PM ET I was at the matinee and actually saw her at the stage door when she got there (which was late for her-almost 1:00.) Anyway, the lamb was hysterical and I really thought Tammy was going to crack up more than she did.
I am not sure what they (the cast) were doing for her birthday but I do know that something was planned because while waiting outside, I overheard someone going into the stage door mention (on a cell phone) that everyone was going out because it was Bernadette's birthday.
I also saw Marvin Laird walking down the street on his way to the show....and met "Jean" (purely by accident...which was a pleasant surprise.)
I would have preferred to be at the evening show because there was no mention of her birthday at the matinee.

| posted: 2/29/2004 at 5:49:46 PM ET One of the little newsboys, Eamon Foley, was having his last night which is why a lot of the kids, particularly Addison Timlin, were crying during the curtain call. I think that is why Bernadette was pulling him center stage and then the cast started singing happy birthday and someone brought out the bouquet. They looked like a mixture of flowers. So the Happy Trails song after the curtain went down was for Eamon.
I had planned to meet my friends at Angus McIndoe after the show. They had gone to see Little Shop. Upon arrival we very quickly learned there was a private, cast only, birthday party for Bernadette upstairs. She of course did not show up for quite some time because of all of the folks at the stage door, I guess. It was so cute because everyone at the party was wearing buttons on their shirts that was a picture of Bernadette when she was a little girl. I think it was the one she showed on Regis that one time. At least I know I've seen it somewhere like that. A lot of the cast members came downstairs for a smoke so I was able to see the button. Bernadette arrived around midnight, I think and we heard them sing Happy Birthday again when she got upstairs. We probably left 10-15 minutes later and Patty came out behind us with gifts to put in the car so maybe she was leaving the party already.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 3/1/2004 at 10:20:17 AM ET Everyone has already covered Saturday's highlights, so nothing much to add, except that it was really exciting to watch Bernadette--and indeed the rest of the cast--very patiently and graciously sign for the very large group in the evening; I've not done the stage door thing before. And what energy level--from the fans and from the performers.
Four observations:
1) At the matinee: DID SHE REALLY SAY THAT? Final scene--Louise gives her fur stole to Rose, says : "I've got another in the *BATHROOM*" (Of course we all know it should be "box office".) Funny to me, anyway, and Bernadette seemed to be smiling broadly; was Tammy trying to crack Bernadette up? Did Tammy forget her line? Will someone ask her?
2)I was touched--and I'd guess that Bernadette was also moved--that the folks waiting for her at the stage door sang Happy Birthday.
3) Nice to accidentally meet Mandy--now I wonder who else I talked to/sat or stood next to, etc were posters from this site.
4) I took a few pictures, will send the best to Kevin shortly (Mandy check your PM).
And finally, my celebrity sighting: after the Saturday matinee, getting into a Lincoln Towncar on 45 Street in front of the Minskoff ("Fiddler on the Roof")-- a quick glimpse of--LIZA! (So I stood there and gawked through the darkened window for a few seconds, no longer the sophisticate that I know I am. Ahh, New York!!) I just re-read this--Liza was not at Gypsy, at least as far as I know--perhaps at Fiddler.

Jean...I caught that too. The way that Tammy was smiling & the way Bernadette looked at her I think it was intentional on Tammy's part, but that's just an assumption.
Also, did you notice that at the end of "You Gotta Have a Gimmick" when Miss M went by Tammy the second time she seemed to look back and say something to her? But then, again, I could be way off base. I remember one time in early February where she stuck out her tongue out at Tammy.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 3/1/2004 at 11:22:55 AM ET Yes, PAFan, at various performances I saw Miss M seem to be saying something to Tammy and also stick out her tongue at her, and once or twice quickly pat her on the nose! It's nice to see they can be loose on stage and throw in these little things, but without harming the flow of the show or the integrity of character, and without crashing through that fourth wall. (See "The Producers" for a maybe too much demonstration of adlibbing..just my opinion!)

From Internet Network: 199.75.26.x | posted: 3/1/2004 at 4:40:13 PM ET I was at the matinee performance on Saturday, which was amazing! My mom and I had a really great time. The lamb was really going to town with Tammy's hair!!! We were slow leaving and we could hear the cast behind the curtain singing Happy Birthday after the show, and the audience members who were left applauded.

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 3/1/2004 at 5:09:08 PM ET Miss M stuck her tongue out on Sat. night too. This was the first performance I was at that Rose's Turn got a standing ovation, and also the first where people started applauding again when Rose kept bowing. I guess they didn't realize that it's supposed to be Rose, not Bernadette, bowing. I thought her voice had a lot of power on Saturday night. She certainly was able to deliver many of her lines at full volume. I really thought Tammy did a great job during the strip. Do you suppose there are people who see the show who don't realize that the same actress who sings "Little Lamb" also does the strip? Sometimes I wonder about some audience members. Satuday night I was sitting near some people who I think were waiting for Bernadette to become Gypsy Rose Lee.
I just noticed that the March playbills don't list Gypsy in the list of shows still playing. Hope they fix that.
My celeb sighting was Ben Chaplain leaving the Booth on Sat. night. I heard him tell his driver that he was going to Angus. Did you see him there Moljul?

It was so cute because Addison Timlin (Baby Louise) and Heather Tepe (Baby June) were so excited to meet Matthew Broderick. They just stood and stared at him for quite some time trying to get each other to go up and talk to him and then David Burtka took them over and introduced them to Matthew. They were both very excited. Of course one of my friends I was with has a veyr big crush on Matthew so she was just as excited when he sat down next to us.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 3/1/2004 at 6:41:11 PM ET Cute story--sounds like Angus is the new Peter Allen or Sardis; and to think I had a decaf coffee from Cranberry in my hotel room. (Will give recommendation on the hotel the next time anyone has out-of-town visitors.)
Standing after Roses Turn--I can't figure out why or when the audience takes it into its collective head to stand, but Sat. night people were just very quickly popping up, and it was very exciting. I always wonder what Bernadette is thinking-sometimes she seems to be smiling as Rose, with that far away look in her eyes, but sometimes she is really almost laughing and making very obvious eye contact, perhaps as Bernadette. I feel that we are pulled into Rose's fantasy at that point-quite a unique theater experience I think. Hmm, there's a question to ask her-too bad the Gypsy forum is closed (is it?)

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 3/1/2004 at 6:53:41 PM ET Hi Jean,
Do you mean Joe Allen? Where did you stay? I'm always looking for nice, clean, not too expensive hotels in New York. This stay I tried the Belvedere. I've also done the Gorham, Muse, Marriot, Hilton Times Square, Milford (yikes, unless it's been renovated), Omni Park (another yikes unless it's been improved since 1996), Novotel and some others I can't remember.
I almost went to Angus' but decided to grab some sushi at Kodama's instead.
