Hi Jean,

Do you mean Joe Allen? Where did you stay? I'm always looking for nice, clean, not too expensive hotels in New York. This stay I tried the Belvedere. I've also done the Gorham, Muse, Marriot, Hilton Times Square, Milford (yikes, unless it's been renovated), Omni Park (another yikes unless it's been improved since 1996), Novotel and some others I can't remember.

I almost went to Angus' but decided to grab some sushi at Kodama's instead.

Oh yes, Joe Allen (can you guess what I'm going to be doing on my NY trip next Wednesday?)

We stayed at the Best Western Ambassador on 45 Street just east of Broadway-7 Ave. The room was small, but that doesn't matter to me (I travel and you should see some of the rooms we've had, especially in Italy and France). The hotel seemed clean, no mold in the bathroom (very important), very quiet, probably 60 or 70 rooms in all, so there isn't a lot of bustle. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. There was no problem leaving our little overnight bags both before we were able to check in and on Sunday after we checked out, until I picked them up after my matinee. A breakfast of coffee, juice, and bagels/donuts is included. $129 for two --the room rate is probably variable, depends on season, maybe getting a AAA rate, etc, also I tried to use the Best Western web site to reserve but it was totally messed up so I used Travelocity but paid an extra $5, I think.

I have stayed in exactly 3 hotels in New York, the others are the Woodward (on 55 Street near 7 Ave), also very nice, clean, newly renovated, and the Helmsley Windsor, 58 and 6 Ave-nice but not too convenient for theater.

Oh the Boy from Oz. I saw BFO for the second time on Thursday. Hugh Jackman -- just looking at him makes me smile. Thursday night at the start of the second act, he said there was a guy who had written him a note and though he didn't usually take requests, this couple had a special dance or something. The guy and girl came down front, Jackman gave the guy his mike and the fella got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend. Jackman took a polaroid from the stage and someone else from backstage took a picture and gave the guy the camera. Jackman told them to come backstage after the show too. Even the onstage female backup singers were wiping tears from their eyes. I can't imagine what kind of requests Jackman will be getting now.

Anyway I got a AAA rate of $128 at the Belvedere but no breakfast. I liked the location 48th between 8th and 9th. I'm used to staying in slightly larger rooms, but it was clean and the price was right.

Did anyone notice that at the Saturday evening performance something got off during the Herbie, Rose, Crachitt exchange. I think Bernadette ended up repeating the "What about the act" line. I liked the addition of her attempt to make Herbie dance with her where she's holding onto him and he doesn't move at all.

YES! I did notice that. Either Bernadette or John forgot to say their line, I think. Either Bernadette forgot it and John eventually said it for her and then that just kind of knocked things off for a second or John missed his line and Bernadette was trying to cover it. It did make that portion a little static. I think it might have been that Bernadette was just getting so angry that she forgot to say her line and John tried to cover. Just my feeling from watching it and watching their faces.

I was there for the Saturday night performance, and had a "yikes!" moment too with the couple behind me, a man and a woman both in about their early 50s, I'd say. As the overture began, I heard the man say, "Is this a musical?"
"Uh huh," I thought.
In the second act, when the Hollywood Blondes first enter the burlesque theater, the wife asked, "what is this? what did she say?" The husband: "Burlesque." I think these two were in shock most of the second act.
Why do such people ever leave home?

I really noticed a lot of energy from the cast, particularly Bernadette, and I thought her voice was the strongest yet that I heard.

To PTM on hotels- and to all on performances: I stayed at best western Ambassador Wed.-Sun.alone with an AARP rate at $105 nightly -except $114 on Fri.& Sat.Very clean & quiet & on a no-smoking floor.Uncomfortable a bit about smoking floors at all.In JUly,stayed at the Comfort Inn Mid-town that is a no-smoking hotel.Again, clean and quiet-price about the same.Neither is the Marquis, but how much time do you stay in the hotel?
Performances:Gypsy Thurs nite in 8th row orch.center-incredible show by all the cast whom I find more comfortable in their roles,esp.Tammy.Audience great and was full on orch.level-don't know about the rest.Waited very long outside in wind and cold, but Rose told us she was meeting with her director, hence,Bernadette's delay. But she stayed long with the fans -as charming as ever!
Saw "Boy from "Oz" Friday nite and loved it--8th row orch.and close to the incredible Hugh J.Loved the music!
Sat, nite "Gypsy"-again! Took a chance at the box office Fri.nite, and because I wanted a single ticket,I got one in the 4th row,cen.orch. I was beside myself with happiness!John and Bernadette are so playful together and truly seem to like each other.
Comments from people in the alley after the show:
"This is what Broadway is all about, or should be- Bernadette Peters and her graciousness"
"She seems like your next door neighbor"
Truly like the girl next door"!
"I flew all the way from Australia to see her -"(Said by two different people)
"Look at that beautiful hair! I'd like to run my fingers through it!"

I did some selling of the show in the theatres and lobbies and on the street! People would say "What show should we go to"?;or is Bernadette Peters really Good? And I jumped right in and told them to see her before they left NY ! Oh, I sold the show to waiters & patrons in restaurants, also! You can tell I'm not shy when it's something I believe in; people were glad to have someone share their experience. Many also told me what shows they liked.
On a personal note or two:
Sometimes it's a pleasure to go on vacation alone--I found I could be very much myself..get up and eat when you want,go places without consulting anyone;express my emotions without embarrassment- and I'm not afraid to be in Ny-I"m careful where I go at night-don't walk back streets, and find a hotel generally near Times Square- or take a cab! Some of my family and friends thought I was crazy-(only my 2nd time in the city)-but it was great.I'm very independent and single so--try it sometime!(and I'm 70 yrs old)!
I"m going to miss seeing Gypsy and especially Bernadette so much! I thought maybe I'll NEVER see her in person again- and that hurts so very much.I'll try to get there when the show finally closes,-and then have to say good-bye all over again...
Have I been personal enough!??
Live life with joy and love!

Patty,
I totally concur. I've made 5 trips to the city since last June, all on my own. I travel alone and have no qualms at all (I turn the big 5-0 this year). It's great. I can change plans, and not disappoint anyone else. I've gotten some good seats too because I only need one.
I've stayed at the Majestic on 55th and Broadway (last June on a special, $125 with 3rd night half price) and at the WJ (Washington Jefferson) at 51st and 8th ("Wicked" was just across 8th, but I couldn't get a ticket, doggonnit; the Shubert is just 9 blocks down 8th), which has singles for $100, small rooms but very clean and fairly new renovations, and friendly staff. Valet parking $25 for 24 hours. But, yeah, I just need a clean, safe place to crash.
[Twice last weekend people asked me questions, thinking I lived in the city. I thought, 'Hey, cool. I look like a New Yorker.' ]

Oh, I forgot one thing about Saturday night that gave me a chuckle. Did anyone else notice that if Bernadette had not been wearing 3 inch heels on stage that she and Baby Louise would be the same size? Addison has really grown.

Say, PATTY, was that you running around on the 4th floor Saturday night? (Just kidding, what a coincidence that we were in the same hotel!)

I doubt that I'll stay over in NY again, but if I do, I'll take a look at some of the hotels that you all have mentioned.

Note to all who are in NY alone: while I travel the world with my best friend--and usually with a tour group, I think NY is perfectly safe and really lots of fun alone. (Of course, it helps that I grew up there, in another, kindler and gentler time.)

Yes, Moljul, the added height of "Baby Louise" is really getting obvious.

Yes, PATTY, I love the ease and obvious liking that John and Bernadette have together. And I think we've seen Tammy grow up right in front of us!

Sing Out Annie--that couple you talked about sound clueless--but wouldn't you like to think that after that performance they fell a little bit in love with-musicals, live theater, and Bernadette?

Nice to share these thoughts with all of you.

(Boy From Oz on Wednesday will be my second time, Wicked the following week also my second time.)

Jean,

RE: the clueless couple.
Yes, indeedy, that would be my hope. If Saturday night at "Gypsy" was their first show, they set a high standard of performance for other shows to live up to. And that's a good thing. Why not the best?
Actually, a young man in his 20s was directly behind me (we were both in aisle seats), and I thought perhaps he was the son of those two and he was giving the folks a taste of NYC. Anyway, he seemed to thoroughly enjoy the show and laughed loudly at all the right places. If he was the son, perhaps he filled in mom and pop afterward.

Yes, I've walked back to my hotel after evening performances and felt perfectly safe.
And ALIVE!! New York City just makes you feel so alive.

Some girl (looked to be about 17 or so) and her mom were sitting next to me on Saturday night and they were having so much fun. It was clearly their first time seeing Gypsy considering they both seemed to be in delightful shock when the lamb was brought out, and during other scenes.
It made me smile to see someone who was experiencing this show for the first time and really enjoying themselves. It put everything into perspective for me and caused me to watch the show that night as if I were watching for the first time again. I really had fun.

Did anyone else notice that if Bernadette had not been wearing 3 inch heels on stage that she and Baby Louise would be the same size?
HAHAHA I can't believe you said that Moljul! I was thinking the exact same thing when I was watching. It was during the scene in the house where Rose is telling Louise that she has powers to read palms. lol All I thought was, "Wow! Addison is almost the same height as Bernadette."

And like I said, I think without those heels, Addison WOULD BE the same height. LOL But yes, I noticed it the most during the palm reading part.

On the topic of sharing obnoxious audience stories, my Saturday night seat included being seated next to a very large man (not his fault) as well as being in front of a woman who proceeded to make so much noise with bags of some sort of food (very much her fault). I tried to glare over my shoulder several times but she never seemed to get the idea that she was being rude. I almost contemplated asking an usher at intermission if I could stand in the SRO area.

In Saturday night's show, when Rose & the kids are with her dad, it seemed to me that Bernadette took her coat off later than usual. I always thought she took it off shortly after getting in the room, but it seemed she hung it up later than usual that night. Anybody on this?

At the Saturday matinee, I also noticed how tall Addison is getting (especially when standing next to Bernadette.)

Jean-
Yes, that was ME in room 403! If I had known "Gypsies" were across the hall,we could have had much "Bernadette" conversation,I'm sure. Small world, isn't it?!
