From: Long Island, New York & Boston, | posted: 2/2/2004 at 10:27:51 PM ET I found out this horrible news a couple of hours ago but haven't been home until now. Guys, as loyal fans to Broadway, Gypsy, and Bernadette I think it is our time to take matters into our own hands. Someone who is eloquent with words should type up an email describing the show, the storyline, everything good about Gypsy. Post it on this website and everyone here send it to every single person you know. Tell all those people to forward it to whoever they know. All these emails will reach out to hundreds potentially thousands of people if we all work at it. Tell them to save Gypsy! Make up flyers and post them in your neighborhood or school. Post a flyer on your car window. Ask to post a flyer in restaurants or stores. If you have the money, put it in the classifieds. Do whatever you can. This may be an impractical idea but its better to try than to watch this show close knowing that we did nothing to try and save it.
Ironically, I'm seeing the show tomorrow evening for Kids Night. I don't know what to say to Bernadette or to anyone at the stage door. I'm 16 and my friends don't have the money to see this show full-price, so include discount codes to see it. Anything to try and save it. The playbill article itself said that if tickets sales boost they might extend. We are all greatful to Bernadette for all that she has done for us, let's do something for her now.

Registered: 9/3/2003 | posted: 2/2/2004 at 11:42:12 PM ET I absolutely agree with you, Megan. I think, if she has time, that UCF would be a good person to write something up for Gypsy. We've all seen how she writes. If she doesn't feel like it or can't do it, I'd be more than willing to type something up.
This can work, guys! We have to *make* it work.

From: Long Island, New York & Boston, | posted: 2/2/2004 at 11:46:45 PM ET I'm working on something right now but I think if anyone can write fairly well, submit it to the board and we will all pull together. I did the math and if one person sends this to 20 people, and those 20 each send it to another 20 people, and if this series continues merely 5 times, 3.2 million people will read it. Think of that. 20 to the 5th power = that amount. 3.2 MILLION! And even if only 25% of those 3.2 million buy tickets, there's 800,000 tickets sold if each person only buys one ticket. And what if each person buys 2 tickets? Times an average of $65-75 per ticket, thats an incredible amount of money. This may very well work if we all play our cards right. We have to try guys.

From: Long Island, New York & Boston, | posted: 2/3/2004 at 12:42:54 AM ET I made up an email but I'm not sure if my facts and figures are all correct and I want your opinions. Here goes:
My name is Megan and I am 16 years old from Long Island, NY. This past year I have grown to be a loyal fan of the Broadway show, Gypsy, starring the incredibly talented Bernadette Peters. You may know her from such movies as Annie, Pennies from Heaven & The Jerk (with Steve Martin), and Pink Cadillac (with Clint Eastwood). She is the winner of 2 Tony Awards, including over 6 total nominations, a golden globe award, Grammy award, and many other achievements. Please read this to the end.
On February 2nd, the producers of the show announced that it will be closing on February 28th 2004 just one month short of their one-year anniversary on Broadway AND on Bernadette Peters’ birthday. The drop in ticket sales has been due to the snow storms and natural down-time of vacationers in NYC during the winter. Unless ticket sales increase within the next 3 weeks, this show will close and the lights will be dimmed forever.
The ferocious role of Rose, portrayed by Bernadette Peters, is both the most challenging and rewarding female role ever written for Broadway. The story begins with Rose, a desperate and near insane mother, who forces her two daughters June and Louise into show business because she did not gain fame herself when she was young. Rose sacrifices everything for her children, including making clothes for them from hotel blankets and eating dog food so that her children will have a good meal. Without giving the true juicy plot away, Rose forces her plain untalented daughter Louise to strip at one last attempt to be a STAR.
I find this musical to be one of the best written ever because every single person out in this world can relate to it. Have you ever felt the heartbreak of not being good enough? Have you ever been willing to give up everything for your children so that they can be successful? Have you ever regretted at not trying to be a writer or an artist or a singer or anything because the people around you told you that you would fail? Have you ever wanted something so bad you’d do anything to get it? If so, you must see this show and I promise you that you will leave jaw-dropped at the emotional intensity, acting ability, choreography by an 10 year old on pointe ballet already, and the music that empowers this production. Nominated for 4 Tony Awards and possessing one of the greatest musical scores ever composed and the preeminent storyline, this is surely not a show to miss. Songs are written by Stephen Sondheim, best known for his work in Company, Into the Woods, and West Side Story. Writer Arthur Laurents created this story based on the true life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and has also written Anyone Can Whistle and La Cage aux Folles. The director is Sam Mendes, best known for the critically acclaimed film, American Beauty. Previously the role of Rose was portrayed by such greats as Angela Lansbury, Ethel Merman, and Bette Midler.
Now I ask you this: please forward this email to everyone you know. If you take five minutes to send this to 20 people, and each of those 20 people send it to 20 more people, this email will reach 400 people in minutes. The press has stated that if ticket sales boost in the next 3 weeks, the show will remain open.
You have 100+ jobs lying at your finger tips. If this show closes, many people, fathers and mothers, will be out of a job and this is a terrible thing especially in this economy. You have the power to save one of the greatest shows ever to come to Broadway. I beg you, to buy a ticket or two and see this phenomenal production. I have discount codes available that reduce the normally priced tickets of $100 to 35-50% less. If you do not have the money or time to see this show, please send it to anyone you know. There are a group of 20 loyal fans of Gypsy desperately trying to save this show. Remember with one email sent to 20 people and each of them send it to 20, and this continues up to mere 5 times, it will reach 3.2 million people! 20 X 20 = 400 x 20 = 8,000 X 20 =160,000 X 20 = 3,200,000. This show can so easily be saved!
Just a little bit of extra information, recently the cast and crew of Gypsy raised $300,000+ for victims of HIV/AIDS including children. They also raised $60,000 for homeless animals in the tri-state area. These actors are real caring people who will stand in 10 degree weather to sign autographs for 50 people making the dreams come true for aspiring young actresses to meet their idols every single night. This production has done so much for the community and continues to produce standing ovations regularly.
Visit www.telecharge.com to purchase tickets. I guarantee that you will not regret it. You will be captivated by these songs, this story, and these actors. Email me at LiLPrincipessa11@aol.com for anyone questions. Please forward to everyone you know!
Sincerely,
Megan R.

Registered: 9/3/2003 | posted: 2/3/2004 at 12:43:02 AM ET Another idea:
How about starting a petition asking for the video to be released to the public? There is a video made of every Broadway show that is kept in a library for research purposes. But, what if we passed around a petition asking for it to be realeased? Yes, they've had movies of Gypsy before, but they've all been just that. Movies. Throwing out a taped version of the Broadway production would be something entirely different. If we passed around a petition through email and if it reached those same 3.2 million people and even half of them signed, could the producers refuse? And that way, no matter when Gypsy closes, because it will eventually, all we'll have to do is pop in a DVD and have it at our fingertips? Just an idea, of course...

From: Long Island, New York & Boston, | posted: 2/3/2004 at 12:55:30 AM ET I don't know, sounds like a good idea. I just feel like there's no experience like being at a Broadway show and its got to be devastating for the cast to be told they only have got a little more than 20 days to perform. I just think we should try to keep a great thing going. I know it will close eventually but I just think if we can get it through the winter, ticket sales will go up again in the spring and summer.

From: Toronto | posted: 2/3/2004 at 11:35:21 AM ET I also think we should maybe send copy to playbill online and broadway.com. They might think it's interesting, print a story, and that way more people will know........
Still trying to make it down there this month.........

From: northern VA | posted: 2/3/2004 at 11:51:09 AM ET Guys....
I think it's lovely that you care so much. Honest. I wish this show would continue. I'm as big a fan of Bernadette as is anyone here.
But please-think twice before you do something. Sending unsolicited email to 111 people is spam. If your ISP gets complaints, you can lose your ISP account. Realize that not everyone is a Bernadette fan or a fan of this particular production-if that person gets an unsolicited email pleading with them to buy tickets, that may not be a very welcome email. And it's not hard to file complaints with ISPs. Plus,if word comes back that this email campaign began on this board, how will it reflect on this board? Again-I'm not trying to be mean, but do you like unsolicited email, regardless of its intentions? Unsolicited email is not welcome by many people.
Do what you want to spread the word, but please-think twice. I'm not trying to be mean-I'm only giving a friendly warning. Really. You don't want to lose your ISP over this.
I'm not writing this to be ugly or to scare (well, maybe a little scare)-it would be a shame if anything bad happened because of this. I'm not saying anything will happen. Just please...don't send bulk email to unknown persons. Okay-lecture's over, and I'm sorry to upset anyone.

From: Toronto | posted: 2/3/2004 at 12:41:49 PM ET I agree with Jenn in the sense that we shouldn't send e-mails to people we don't know. However, we can send e-mails to everyone we DO know and I think that would be fine. I definately wouldn't want this to reflect badly on the website, or on the company of Gypsy.
Any one have any comments on my idea about playbill.com and broadway.com. I don't think it would be considered spam if we clearly state our intentions. Anyway, just my thought.

And even though seeing a show in person is better I'd love to have a copy of Gypsy on tape. Don't we all enjoy Into The Woods and Sunday In The Park With George even though it isn't live.

From: Long Island, New York & Boston, | posted: 2/4/2004 at 12:19:03 AM ET Sorry I haven't responded in a while..I had school. My intention with this email was to send it to only people we personally knew and are friendly with. I did't mean it to become a "send it to a random stranger thing." By sending it to people we know, that increases the chances for them to even care enough to read it. I will revise the email and clearly state to send it to only people you know and I will remove any indication of Kevin's board. As to sending it to playbill or broadway.com, it needs a few revisions which i will work on promptly. I have never emailed those websites something before, how does that work?
Also I'm a little confused, where did the 111 emails come from? I know I didn't sent 111 emails..i tried looking back over the posts and couldn't figure out where this number came from. If I typed that it's a typo lol..should be 11.

It wasn't you, hon. Some posts were deleted. Everything's OK.
About broadway.com and Playbill's site-unfortunately,this isn't a situation that hasn't happened before. Fans of certain shows have done quite a bit to try to save shows before. Side Show in particular.
