Thanks Sister Rose. I knew I saw it on Amazon when I looked a few weeks back, but I wasn't sure it was the right show. I thought it was a little strange that you could buy it before it even aired. But, I guess you could. :-) Thanks for confirming!

Ashley, before you buy the DVD, why not check your local TV listings; Washington PBS is rebroadcasting the 3 shows again, late at night. Perhaps that is the case in your area.

I was wondering if anyone knows when it will be replaying?

Futuremamarose-

As Jean said in the post before yours, you have to check your local listings. Your PBS station may or may not rerun the shows.

"For example, when they're talking about Longacre Square in 1893, they show some silent footage of a slummy looking area. But it couldn't really be actual documentary footage, so what exactly is it?"

But Karen, Thomas Edison's (and Dickson's) kintescope was created in 1891,and his movie studio on his property (the first movie studio in the world,I believe) was finished in 1893. And moving images were around even before that (in a much cruder matter). Why can't it be real footage?

It's just amazing how popular Broadway shows were in the 1940s and 1950s. I mean, this isn't news to me,but a tribute to R&H preempting Sunday night shows and airing on all three networks....

I've already asked for the DVD set for Christmas.

Just saw the second installment, and it continues to be really good and really enjoyable. Kind of wish I hadn't gone off on a tangent about documentaries in general.

The thing about Edison's camera is that it had to be kept rigidly immobile in a fixed position in his New Jersey studio. Filming was done there under very controlled circumstances. It was several years later before others developed the equipment that permitted outdoors, on location shooting. And even that was only done on a limited basis until about the turn of the century ( a lot of early newsreel footage was "recreated" by the filmmakers).

It's not that big a deal though; I was probably making too much of it. Now that the series has moved ahead chronologically to a more recent point in history, there's more available film. Also, tonight they seemed to provide more information on where the performances came from, like identifying the Ethel Waters song as being done on a 1950 NBC TV show, etc. It still wasn't consistent throughout though.

Anyway, it really doesn't matter, so just forget that I brought it up. LOL! Sheesh, how embarrassing.

Switched back and forth from the ball game, but saw the portion on "My Fair Lady." The two TV clips of Julie Andrews singing songs from MFL really brought to mind the criminality of her not being in that movie. Audrey was lovely, but Julie *was* Eliza and could sing -- and with, what was it?, an 8-octave range?
THE *biggest* crime in movie history.

Karen - you have valid points as I see where you're coming from on the historical integrity of the documentary.

SingOutAnnie - DON'T GET ME STARTED ON AUDREY HEPBURN. I can't stand her! I'm an old movie buff and honestly the only thing I can take her in is Charade and that's only because Cary Grant is in it! So there!

OK Karen-I see your point. I wasn't challenging-I was genuinely curious (btw-how's the Mordden book coming?). I taped the first episode and haven't watched it yet,so I was wondering why you thought it was fake. I do agree that identifying clips could be better. There are quite a few people on All That Chat that agree with you. I'm going to miss some of tonight's episode, since this is my late night to work. I'm going to wait a bit and rent it from Netflix (since there is a short wait right now). The last bit about Hammerstein was lovely-made me tear up.

I need to go buy the OCR of The Sound of Music. I had it years ago,but I lost it. I think Mary Martin's recording of "The Sound of Music" (as in the title song) is lovely. As is Julie Andrews's,of course, and quite different. I hadn't quite realized that until now, since it's been a long time since I've listened to the OCR.

Oscar Hammerstein is my hero. The world would be a happier place if more people thought like he did. Remember Bernadette's comment about doing the R&H album? Sondheim told her Hammerstein believed every word of the lyrics he wrote.

I absolutely grew up on and wore out the OCR of "the Sound of Music" with Mary Martin. Two short songs on it that were not used in the movie would have made the movie stronger. But still, the movie is why I would be so absolutely flummoxed, tongue-tied and overwhelmed if I ever met Julie Andrews. I saw the MFL revival in London at the Drury Lane theater in 2001 and was overcome just knowing that Rex Harrison and Ms. Andrews played in MFL there too (and that revival remains my most wonderful, favorite theater experience ever to date -- with the last performance of "Gypsy" this year in a close second).

I thought it was funny that during the Rodgers and Hammerstein sequence, they used the Jack Benny and Groucho Marx clips that Bernadette had at her RCMH concert.

Thanks Jean for suggesting that I look for the show to be replayed on PBS. I didn't even think of that!

I really enjoyed this documentary. However I think it really was just a history of the creators behind shows and the endurance of Broadway. I think they could have spent a lot more on the actors themselves.

I still recommend seeing "Broadway the Movie" which is more a history of the actors. It is still in theaters some places and is also on DVD Movie After I saw it, Rick McKay discussed the making of it. He said that that its a possibility that he will do a second segment or possibly a mini-series on PBS which will extend from the Golden Age and include Bernadette, Liza, et al.

Actually dig deeper in McKay's website and find that he has already started "The Second Generation". I sent him an email to find out if he is interviewing Bernadette or not. He better.
