From: northern VA | posted: 2/6/2005 at 11:48:14 AM ET I just watched the Mary Poppins 40th anniversary DVD-if you are a fan of this, you *must* get this. Julie Andrews,Dick Van Dyke,Karen Dotrice (she played Jane),and Richard Sherman (the composer) are on the audio commentary. I haven't watched this in years, and I adore it,and I never regularly watched it when I was a child. There's also a documentary on the making of the movie, you can set the movie to have pop-up facts during the movie...all kinds of wonderful stuff that I haven't watched yet.
I'm going to have to buy this. And the soundtrack. I'm interested in getting the OLC recording eventually, since I've heard the show is excellent (and not just a transferring of the movie to the stage, but I don't think it's out yet,if it's even been recorded).

Save it for a day when you're feeling a bit down. It's magic.
I didn't know Glynis Johns was the mother! That voice started, and I *knew* I heard it from somewhere. It was Desiree!
I cried during "Let's Go Fly a Kite." I'm not ashamed to say it!

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 2/6/2005 at 12:36:21 PM ET I saw 'MP' several times when I was 9 or 10 (thus giving away my age), knew the soundtrack album by heart (vinyl, folks) and wore it out (wish I had it today to sell on ebay, but it went to a niece, who about 15 years later learned it all by heart too).
I saw the movie on ABC a couple of months ago, after not seeing it for about 40 years. Could not believe how much I remembered, still knew all the songs (sang along, of course), and just enjoyed the heck out of seeing Julie Andrews again in the role (and also raised my blood pressure over the morons who didn't think she was photogenic enough to play Eliza Doolittle in the movie -- biggest bonehead move in movie history).
I watched some of the SAG awards last night. And when Julie Andrews spoke on stage, I was thinking about how utterly tongue-tied I would be if I ever got a chance to meet her. It all started with Mary Poppins.

Now I think I will at least rent the video.

Was it practically perfect in every way?
(They made a song into that, didn't they?)
