| posted: 1/9/2001 at 7:57:37 PM ET I'd been a closet Bernadette fan for awhile -- collecting CDs and supporting the FIDO/NYC and BCEFA (Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS) charities, but until recently I hadn't had the means to see her live. When I heard that she was leaving Annie Get Your Gun I basically begged my Aunt to pick up tix in NYC. (Thankfully she got them too -- tickets for her 2nd to last performance.) I already had the cast recording (autographed by her as part of a FIDO fundraiser) but I must say it does no justice to seeing her live. Her personality and attitude on stage coupled with her cohesion with Wopat was fantastic. I hung outside the stage doors and she didn't come out to sign stuff (it was a matine and from what I understand she naps between performances). I would've come back at night but then I'd be staying overnight in NYC because of the bus schedule.
As soon as I could I ordered tix for her concert performance at the Mann in Philly. Never before has any singing stirred up such emotion in me like she did that evening. That night I hung out (despite the cold) just to get her to autograph the playbill and program from Annie.
It wasn't until the McCarter performance that she really floored me. I bought tix for me and my parents (for their anniversary). I'd been working a dead-end job for about a month and been having second thoughts on college, my career and my life. When she sung "No One Is Alone" from Sondheim's "Into The Woods" I just started to cry. It was the oddest thing too, I had tix 2 rows from the back but with the house lights out and the spot light on her it was like she was singing just to me. It was almost like she could feel the turmoil I was in and letting me know that everything would be OK. The amount of stress and tension that I was able to release during that short song was absolutely incredible. It was so emotional for me that even as I write this I can't help but get teary-eyed.
After the performance I hung around (of course) at the stage door to get a picture. Now I know this is going to sound incredibly cheesy, but I had that picture of her and me blown up to an 8x10 and it's sitting on my desk now. Every time I look at it I somehow feel just a little less lost in life, remembering that "No One Is Alone".

The reson that she is my favorite performer is because she strongly conveys the feeling of "Hey, we're all in this together and I have feelings, too, just like you". I believe that it is this unique quality that has always elevated her from the ranks of 'performer' to "star".
"No One Is Alone" has a very special meaning for myself, also as many times the meaning of that song
inspired me to "push away the blues". It is a very powerful song with a true meaning that carries a wonderful spiritual message. No one is ever truly alone, and I thank Sondheim and Bernadette for making us realize that!

I was at her Princeton concert too! I was floored by her performance as well...although I got the feeling that not much of the audience felt the same way. I thought they were pretty rude. But she was amazing as usual anyways.
