So, for those who have seen Gypsy more than once, do you still make it a habit or "ritual" to go to the stage door afterwards? And if not, is it hard seeing everyone crowding around outside after the show and not think "Oh, I wish I was waiting to see Bernadette too!" ???

From: New York City | posted: 11/17/2003 at 11:53:53 PM ET Hmm... I have been to the stage door three times. The first time I went before I actually saw the musical, to get my Playbill signed (a color playbill that a friend had gotten for me,) but I didn't have a silver pen and didn't realize Bernadette would have a silver pen, so I had her sign her picture inside the Playbill. Where nobody can see her pretty handwriting if I decide to put the Playbill on the wall. Phooey, I thought afterwards. How stupid can I be?
So the next time (when I saw the show) I went back and brought the same Playbill (the color one) and had her sign the OUTSIDE this time. How smart am I? Also, I took a picture. Because now? I have a good camera. My other camera from months past didn't work so well.
When I went to see GYPSY the second time with my friend, Deb, I went to the stage door afterwards because Deb really wanted to go. Plus, there were maybe ten people out there, because the World Series was going on, so it was nicely uncrowded. So that experience was very unrushed and relaxed, and I actually got to talk with Bernadette for awhile, which was also nice. And that was, of course, also the night of the South Park hat, which I still love.
I had gone another time, or two, might have been two, I can't remember, think it was two (to see the show, that is -- thank GOD for student discounts and for my father, who loves me, even though he doesn't get the Bernadette Peters thing -- LOL) and didn't go to the stage door. Been there, done that, basically.
I mean, it's nice to go to the stage door and all, but I don't really feel the need to go again once I've already gone. I mean, I love Bernadette, but first of all, there's a lot of waiting involved at the stage door, and when you have to get home, and/or simply can't wait, it's just not feasible. Second, there are SOOO many people there. And while (I think) it's a blast talking to the other Bernadette fans at the barricade(who I have had nothing but good experiences with, and have been so funny and wonderful and friendly to me while waiting) I can't bring myself to take up someone else's space by the barricade. Because... well, I've been there. I've met her. I've talked to her already. That girl behind me might be from Michigan, and this might be her one and only chance to see Bernadette. And I feel like, the less people taking up that limited space, the better for those who have been waiting their whole lives and may not get the opportunity again.
So I actually feel better about going home now, right after the show. I do look over to the stage door afterwards and feel excited for those who are waiting, though. I always think how nice it will be for them, and how they'll have great memories after this.
Of course, your mileage may vary.

Q: Any funny incidents or accidents with Kristin (Chenoweth)?
Norbert Leo Butz: I have this Errol Flynn moment where I swing in on this rope. One night in San Francisco, I let go of the rope and the rest of the actors started cracking up. I turned around and the rope had literally tied around Kristin's head and got caught on her crown and was pulling her off stage. It was like watching Barbie get hung.

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 11/18/2003 at 10:00:44 AM ET I had similar experiences. I "happened upon" the stage door gathering when I first saw Gypsy in June. After the show, I headed south instead of north toward my hotel and had to backtrack and saw folks clustered around outside the Shubert. Film but no camera. The next time in July, I had a pocket camera, but had picked up the camera with only a couple shots left.
When I went again in August, I got to the fence early enough to be in the second layer of people. I made a sign that said it was my birthday the next day, would she please sign my Playbill. I didn't know about her silver pen either, so I had the page with the cast billing open. She signed that page with Happy Birthday (well, "Hap Bir, Bern" is what it looks like), and I so wished she'd signed the cover. The last time, in October, I got on the fence and right next to her car. The girl next to me said, 'I think we got the best spot.' We were right at the car door, so Bernadette had to come by us. This time I brought a color Playbill from the June show and she signed the cover in the silver pen. And I had a full camera for photos.
Like UCFGuardgirl, I've gotten all I want. If I see Gypsy again, I might still wait outside, but I would let others be up at the fence.
If you get right on the fence or the second layer, you are almost assured to get an autograph. Go immediately to the fence after the show and you should get a spot. She is very appreciative of compliments of her performance, and supportive of young actors. But don't push...
