Wow, I didn't know this....did the rest of you? I am one that sometimes catches onto things a little late....but I had no idea that this was so. Wow!

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 7/17/2003 at 2:33:53 PM ET The last time I spoke to her or anyone else involved with the show about it playing in London it was still up in the air. She is signed to play Mama Rose on Broadway for a year. IF she signed from the start of rehearsals...I don't know, but if she did January would be a year because rehearsals for the Broaway production began in January...so maybe Bernielover8 got his info confused. But again, I don't know for sure. I haven't heard ANYTHING about it possibly going to London in almost 2 years. I sort of find it hard to believe that she'd go straight from Broadway and right into rehearals in London. I'll ask though.

From: New York City | posted: 7/17/2003 at 5:48:27 PM ET It's possible that Bernielover just got the wires crossed a bit. I think there's an older article on the Sondheim website that features a bunch of questions about Bernadette possibly doing Gypsy in London's West End. (And I think this article came out before Gypsy on Broadway had actually been fully cast, or finalized.)
Anyway, I believe it is in this article that talks about Bernadette doing Gypsy in London, in January. In actuality, (and I could be wrong; I'm just hazarding a guess) since Gypsy rehearsals had been scheduled for January for the Broadway version, (maybe Bernadette or someone involved asked that, if the show begin rehearsals, that January would be the better month for the schedules involved?) and since, at the time the article came out, the show had yet to be officially finalized, that perhaps they were still unsure where they wanted to open? In the article it mentions the possibility of London, and I know it was originally talked about (and also taking the show there after a Broadway run) but nothing was ever set in stone.
I'm not saying this is specifically where the information came from, but I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in other articles as well. Perhaps Bernielover just misinterpreted the info?

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 7/17/2003 at 8:04:01 PM ET I remember a little over a year ago (I think it was a year ago April) Playbill.com posted an article saying it was confirmed that GYPSY was going to open in London. And soon after, several other websites followed with the same info. I just remember thinking "what is going on with Playbill.com??" Because I knew their info was false. I don't even think those involved with the show wanted the news of the revival officially coming to Broadway to be announced quite at that time, but they sort of had to correct Playbill.com's false info. And a few days later Playbill.com posted the correct info. I remember there being quite a bit of confusion on many theatre related message boards.
I don't remember there being any official public announcements about rehearsals starting in January until about 2 weeks prior (eventhough Bernadette had already been in rehearsals several weeks before then).
London definitely was talked about as an opening city for this revival amongst those involved with the show, but obviously things changed (I'm happy!!) So, maybe this is where all the confusion is coming from.
