Marguerite Lazzara was not a divorcee!!! Bernadette's parents never divorced and her mother was a Catholic - its unlikely she'd been married before.....I'm so confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From: New York City | posted: 7/3/2003 at 3:36:27 PM ET I could've sworn that Bernadette said once that her parents had separated. (No idea if that means divorce -- it may not, necessarily. I have a friend whose parents have been "separated" for years simply because they cannot afford the divorce.) Anyway. Separation is sometimes confused with divorce, but they're NOT the same thing. The article may have simply inserted one word for the other. It's a pretty common mistake.

| posted: 7/3/2003 at 9:53:55 PM ET Not that this is an appropriate topic, but in the Catholic Church you're not allowed to get a Divorce (only an anulment). Some people ignore that rule and divorce anyway (like my parents), but Bernadette's parents were from a different/older generation. Seperation may have been their best alternative.

| posted: 7/3/2003 at 10:44:16 PM ET Or maybe the writer was wrong and they lived a happy life together. I think we are taking what could amount to a factual error too far. I have never read that her parents were divorced or separated. If it was true I think it would be in a few more articles. I read an article that was done on Bernadette when she was in Dames at Sea - yes that far back. The writer went to her home in Queens and her parents were very much there and very much present and together. In fact, I remember one part of the article stating her father said something very nice about her mother and "slipped his arm around her waist" Hardly the act of a separated couple. I also remember in a television interview with Bernadette where she was talking about Making Love Alone and apparently her parents were at home watching the Saturday Night Live when she sang it for the first time. And her dad turned to her mom and said, "You do know what she is singing about". And that was in 1980 or 1981 and her mother died in 1982. So those are two examples of them being together in 1969 and 1981. This article is talking about her mother being a divorcee in 1961. So I think the argument that this article was in error and her parents were not divorced or separated can be substantially proven.

| posted: 7/3/2003 at 10:53:31 PM ET You never know. Ther could have been a brief period when they were seperated. But like I said, this is not an appropriate topic to discuss. I have no idea what her parents' lives were like, and I'm sure neither does anyone here.
In response to Jenny's original question, I don't think any of us knows the answer for sure. Were her parents divorced? No, I don't believe they were. Were they seperated? Well, who knows. They were still married wen her mother died, that's all I know.

From: London | posted: 7/4/2003 at 4:41:32 PM ET Jean, I don't particularly care if they were divorced or not. I was panicking because I thought I'd knew all there was to know about Bernadette and this had escaped my attention!!!
Watching wimbledon?! Are you mad! I'm sick of it! BBC 1 and BBC 2 have cut out LOADS of my favourite programs including the simpsons! Damn them.
Anyhoobly doobly, I hadn't read that thread entitled "more press" because the title was very boring and didn't catch my eyeball.
Sorry I'm being blunt but I'm tired and I've eaten waaaay too much sweetcorn.
