I have so many mixed feelings about Shrek coming to Broadway. Part of me thinks it will do well (like Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King), but then part of me thinks that it's a flop waiting to happen. Oh well, I can't judge it until I see it.

Shrek, huh? Oiy. I'm picturing a giant puppet fiasco similar to what I remember of 'She-Ra, Live on Stage,' when I was 7.

But Shrek isn't Disney, so it might be quite different than what The Lion King and B&B bring to the table. Also, since it's musical theatre, it might take a few more jabs at musical theatre in general.

On the Disney front, though, from what I hear, 'The Little Mermaid' is the next film to be brought to the stage. If nothing else, that one should prove interesting, special effects wise.

< ---- Used to work on the walkway near 'The Little Mermaid' show occasionally at Disney World. Knows what cup-size Ariel REALLY is. LOL!

I'm also curious to see what Sam Mendes will do with it, seeing as his last two Broadway projects were Cabaret and Gypsy. Slightly more dark than Shrek, huh?

I actually think this is pretty funny because I was watching Shrek again just last week and was thinking " They should do Shrek on Broadway" and then like 2 days later the press release came out LOL I'm all for it! I LOVE that movie. There are so many things about it that are just so ingenious! I'm still wondering when Hunchback of Notre Dame is coming to Broadway( because it was supposed to).....
Oh, btw...did anyone else think the Prince in Shrek looked a little like Marc Kudisch? hehe

I don't know...this sounds like a big, green flop just waiting to happen. What type of audience are they trying to attract, here? I doubt the kind of people who would shell out 100 dollars a ticket would pick Shrek if say...it was either, "Gypsy", "Hairspray", or "Chicago" playing.

"Beauty and the Beast" and "Lion King" are different in my opinion because the characters are so much more fanciful. These movies aren't so much intended to be laugh out loud funny as they are supposed to be telling a touching and important story with a good moral. For example, with "Beauty and the Beast" the moral is not to judge people based on their looks and to love people and get past their differences, among other things. Shrek just doesn't seem like it would have that kind of power. And I'm already frightened by the thought of what the musical numbers would look like!

I think Shrek would do very well on Broadway, considering I think it broke some box-office records. The thing that makes it different from Beauty and the Beast or Lion King though, is that it not only attracts kids ages around 4 to 12, but teenagers, people in their twenties, and parents loved it too. I think it could work because like Beauty and the Beast it gives a good moral story but it's funny too. I feel that sometimes kids who see Beauty and the Beast get bored with it because, well, it's not entertaining for kids for 2 1/2 hours. With Shrek, there will be great music, a great story, and funny parts that will keep the audience's attention.

Well, I am guessing the same people would go see it on Broadway who saw it in the movie theatres and really enjoyed it. Wasn't it like the highest grossing animated film ever or something like that?? It even won an Oscar.

The theme you mentioned for Beauty and the Beast sounds just like Shrek's. Not to judge someone by their appearance and to follow your heart.

I just don't think its fair to judge something like this before you've even seen it. I have faith in Sam. I think the new things he's done with Gypsy are brilliant!! ( Like having Bernadette in the wings mimicking the kids)

Who knows..it could flop and that'd be ashame..but it could also turn out to be just as successful ( or even more so) than any of the Disney shows.

The first time I saw Shrek it actually sort of reminded me of ITW-- the intertwining of fairytale/Disney characters and their stories.
