"He also has had a hand in its upcoming third return, as a successful advocate for Bernadette Peters to play the lead part of Rose, the fierce stage mother of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee.
"She's incredibly different from the other actresses who've played the role," he said. "Even the timbre of her voice is different."
While her three predecessors embodied the strong-willed, aggressive personality that defines Rose, Peters has a much softer, quirkier image as a performer.
"Bernadette is a very strong woman, but you have to look to find Rose in her,"
When many people were and are questioning the casting of Peters as Rose, I always thought that since the living creators, producer, and director wanted her, who were those nay sayers to second guess the casting, but the part about Laurents serving as an advocate for Peters makes me wonder if Laurents had to sell Peters to the others involved.
