I made it to Columbus to see Bernadette on Saturday, whew! Since my sister and niece and nephew live nearby I met with them and took them to the show too. They loved it. Nice modern theater, grabbed good seats at the center of the front of the balcony. Orchestra was smaller than most I have seen her perform with but sounded amazing. All down to good arranging I would say (nicely done, Marvin!). A very nice, long, luxurious program from Bernadette without any local symphony fundraising shenanigans or "pops" program beforehand - the whole show was Bernadette and she took her time and paced the show very pleasantly. It has been almost two years since I had seen Bernadette do a tour concert and I was amazed at some of the subtle differences she has made to the songs. She is experimenting more with the phrasing, making some phrases longer and and more "free" I guess you could say, stretching the limits of her voice a little more here and there, it was quite thrilling. Of course some of these songs she has sung for awhile now and naturally she is going to experiment a bit with them, but it always amazes me how a singer of such caliber can continuously improve and change when he/she has the skill and courage to do so. It goes without saying that she looked magnificent. The ASPCA had held a big adoption event in town earlier in the day and Bernadette told the audience that her autographed books and CDs in the lobby were to benefit the local animal rescue services - afterwards swarms of people crowded the tables to buy the stuff! It was great.
On top of all of this it was my birthday, and pretty much the first time I have been able to get around and do something really fun like this since I got out of the hospital this year, so thank you Bernadette!
Minutes after the show we were downtown walking to a coffee/dessert place and I saw Cubbie, already in his street clothes, headed to a corner bar where some musicians were set up outside!
