No, I don't believe she has asthma...atleast I've never heard her mention it if she does.

Contrary to popular belief, its the dander(little flakes of skin or hair/fur or the protein in a dogs saliva) that most people are allergic too- not their actual fur. This goes for cats too and other animals. Some people are also allergic to the dander in birds feathers as well.

If Bernadette did have asthma then I am assuming it would have to be a very mild form considering what she does for a living ( being both a singer AND dancer).

You can own dogs and cats even if you're allergic- you just have to bathe them regularly with a specially formulated pet shapoo( a dander denaturing product) and clean your house regularly. My mom and my sister both have asthma( and I have mild allergies to pet dander)-my mom especially has severe asthma and for the longest time she thought we couldn't have dogs with long hair or that shed a lot...however one of my dogs is a Yellow Lab/Husky mix and he has long hair and sheds a LOT and she has had no problem with him because I bathe him a lot and we vacuum the house all the time. And this is what Bernadette does as well...she bathes Stella and Kramer regularly.

LOL didn't Bernadette mention that she uses fabric softner in her dogs' bath or something like that.

Allergies are wierd. I'm allergic to cats, but not dogs. Go figure!

I've honestly never heard her say that she washes her dogs with fabirc softer..but I would assume that that is not a very safe idea. Fabric softners, like many other household items contain toxins that can be deadly. There is also a huge list of plants, that if your dog ingests them( even a small portion)...they could die.
Another factor, that has to be considered...epilepsy is not uncommon among dogs. If you have a dog that has seizures regularly or even just on occassion..you definitely need to be careful about what you expose them to. I, as a pet owner, wouldn't even want to use certain things...such as fabrix softner, to see if they were alleric to or would have a reaction to. Some dogs will have seizure's just at the smell of fabric softner on your clothes. True, if your washing your dog in fabric softer and being very attentive and careful they most likely woudn't be ingestng it..but I wouldn't even want to take that chance. Not to mention that if any of it ends up in their eyes it must hurt!!!! It wouldn't surprise me one bit if people who showed their dogs in competions used fabric softer to make their fur look fluffier or softer but taht doesn't necessarily mean its a good idea!

She talked about using fabric softener on her dogs at Broadway Barks in July 2001. I couldn't tell whether she was kidding or not-you know that way she has of saying something slightly outrageous with a perfectly straight face!

I was there but I don't remember her saying that at all. I'm not saying she didn't say it...I'm just saying I dont remember her saying it. Either way I hope she was just joking! Bernadette says a lot of things in a joking manner and people take her seriously.

That's where I heard her say it too, at Broadway Barks 3! LOL I hope she was joking too, but she sounded really serious (like insisting that it works). I dunno
