People are hating on her for wanting to sit by herself (which she probably had had arranged and paid for) on a flight to Miami Thursday. Thought I'd let people know in case they wanted to defend her.

The clues make it sound like they're talking about Bernadette, but I'm suspicious of this. Since her concert on Friday was in West Palm Beach, I don't know why she'd fly into Miami and not Palm Beach. Plus, I don't think Bernadette would be flying alone since Patty is always with her on engagements. The original destination being labeled as "Brazil" also makes me doubt that it's Bernadette.

Like you said, Ripley, even if it was Bernadette, she probably had arranged to be in a row by herself. She is too kind of a person to make an unwarranted fuss about something.

Once I was flying somewhere and I had booked the aisle AND center seat of a 3 for me. I am petite. 3 large businessmen were stuffed in the row behind me. One of them asked if they could move the center guy into the center seat next to me, because of course he would feel less squished next to me than next to two huge guys. I said "no." I didn't say it rudely, just calmly and politely, but firmly. I don't remember what it was now but there was something kind of intense about the trip I was taking, and I really needed to not having someone flopping over and sleeping on me, no baby next to me, nobody deciding that they didn't need to keep to their side of the armrest just because I'm petite, etc. So I booked it that way because I could afford it, as opposed to 1st class. I kind of felt like the three businessmen knew what airplane seats were like and shouldn't have booked 3 in a row if that's not how they wanted to sit. Plus if I gave up that center seat, as far as I was concerned that was the same as asking me to pay for his plane ticket, since I had paid for that seat. The seat he had booked was of no value to me to have empty.

Also, my husband is a big guy, and sometimes when we travel we select two aisle seats across from each other. That way we can sit next to each other but also both have some space to one side, can go to and from the restroom easily, get our overhead luggage if we need it, etc. Sometimes we end up splitting a family, and they'll ask if we would like to switch, or if we would be willing to switch, and we also politely decline. There's really nothing diva-ish from asking that your plans be respected and carried out once one goes to the effort of making arrangements and paying for them.

I thought that about Patty too. I suppose it is possible that she might have had to fly ahead or behind for some reason to take care of something?

Really, whether it's Bernadette or somebody else, it sounds like they had made certain arrangements, they showed up and they weren't carried out, and they asked simply that it be corrected. That's completely reasonable, in my book.

If Bernadette paid to be in a row by herself, then it's perfectly reasonable that she should expect to be in that row alone. But I still have my doubts if the person in the report really is Bernadette. I would think that Marvin Laird or Richard Jay-Alexander (her stage director) might also be travelling with her to the concerts.

The word "diva" has such negative connotations attached to it. Whenever someone says to me that they don't know who Bernadette Peters is, I always describe her as being a "Broadway legend," never a "Broadway diva."

Another thing to keep in mind is that Bernadette has a very demanding concert schedule this spring and needs to be vigilant about her health. If this story is indeed about Bernadette, I would not be surprised if she wanted the space for health reasons. Flying always exposes one to germs (I can say from experience that I have gotten a cold many times after flying), and who wants to run the risk of being sandwiched beside someone with a cold... especially during prime ? season? Remember, during Gypsy Bernadette had a terrible respiratory infection that plagued her for weeks. I remember reading somewhere in an interview that the infection started with a bug that she thought she caught from a woman who was obviously sick and coughing beside her at a nail salon. There are plenty of perfectly justifiable reasons why she would want to sit by herself, and it is unfortunate that we live in a world where people are so quick to criticize people without caring to know the full story.

True, she can't afford to get sick.

I think it is her, but I certainly don't think less of her for doing what she needs to do to take care of herself and give great shows for her fans.
