the songs of Sondheim, Webber and Rodgers & Hammerstein are not just part of her repertoire, they’re practically her birthright.

Love it!

"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990

"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

That is one of the greatest concert promos I've ever read, and every word so true!
(For the record I fell in love around the age of six when she started appearing on the Carol Burnette Show...)

I am so sad to have to miss this....she's only a few hours from my house, tickets right at my finger tips for weeks, and I can't go because my parents say it's to far away for me to drive!

It was good. Oh, yeah, very good. No, great! Well, I'll tell ya more later--when I get it together better. Suffice it to say, Bernadette is perfection in every way imaginable.

It was a great concert. I loved every second. It all passed by so quickly though. I think you know what I mean. I just wish there were some way to freeze each moment and savor it. Unfortunately, there isn't. The concert was fairly short--about an hour and 20 minutes. It was a slightly abbreviated version of her usual set list in the usual order. The two standard numbers that were omitted were "My Romance/The Way You Look Tonight" and "Time Heals Everything."

Bernadette wore her usual Bob Mackie gown. I'm not good at describing clothing, but it's the one that's sort of beige and sparkly. She looked incredibly beautiful. Body almost inhumanly perfect. What must she have to do to keep it that way? I was sitting in the fifth row and was able to see her very well. Her face is gorgeous (so natural--just the way I like it). She is completely real and natural. There is nothing fake or plastic about her. Do you know how inexpressibly rare that is these days? This is the era where 30 year olds are having plastic surgery and botox. It's gross! But Bernadette looks completely real. She's one of a kind--undeniably.

I think she probably had a slight cold. Her nose was pink/red at the tip and her speaking voice was somewhat husky/hoarse. For the most part it did not affect her singing. She seems to have mastered singing over any cold or allergy. In fact, her head voice/soprano was particularly strong last night. Everything was just wonderful. Her mood seemed especially relaxed and genial. She joked around a lot with the very enthusiastic, responsive audience ( for repressed St Louis!). The running gag throughout the evening was her inability to sell her house in Florida. In the very beginning she mentioned a few things about St Louis that she liked and then she said "What else can we talk about? How about how flat the real estate market is?" Then she said that she had a house that she was trying to sell (unsuccessfully). She returned to this theme throughout the night. It was very funny and completely unexpected. [just in case you're interested the house has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms and there's a very fascinating turtle nest on the beach nearby--as per Bernadette's running description].

Unfortunately, the venue was a university performing arts center built only four years ago, so unlike older, more traditional theatres it did not have an exterior stage door where people could congregate. Thus I had to forgo the pleasure of watching Bernadette interact with her fans after the show. Oh, well, there's always next time for that!

It was a really special night. There was so much love and respect going back and forth between the audience and the performer. It was a reminder of what live theatre is supposed to be about and why, at its very best, it's superior to every other form of entertainment.

I know I'm leaving a lot out. If anyone has any questions, I'll try to answer.

I too was there Saturday night, third row center. As Karen said, the concert was phenomenal. (As usual!) The concert line-up was the exact same one that has been mentioned in recent concert posts, with the exception of no "Time Heals Everything". I agree that her head voice was exceptional- the end of "Unexpected Song" was the best I've heard it in a long time.

There was a post-show, invitation only reception with 'some of her friends and colleagues', I was told, and I had a really hard time getting anyone to tell me where I might be able to wait for her. They kept saying they didn't know where or when she'd come out, but I decided to take my chances and got a friendly usher to give me directions to the loading dock, where I'd find what they'd consider the stage door. It was windy and cold, but a group of six or seven of us waited about a half-an-hour, spoke with her driver, so we knew we were in the right place, and finally got to see her. She was as friendly and gracious as always, even though she must have been freezing. She signed autographs and took pictures with all of us.

It was a wonderful evening!!!!

Hi Jeny! I saw you sitting a couple of rows in front of me. I wasn't as persistent as you with the questions about the stage door (I'm a wimp!). I asked a couple of ushers and they acted as though I was trying to "get away with" something. It was very annoying. I couldn't believe their attitude. It was just very strange.

Oh, I forgot to add that I think the concert was probably sold out. In the days preceding, they were still advertising, so apparently some tickets were still available. However, that night I was looking around the theatre and I really couldn't see any empty seats. If it wasn't sold out, it was pretty darn close to it!

It was weird. There were 3 empty seats next to me and two empty seats in front of me (which I didn't really mind because it made my view less obstructed!) I found it weird that on her official site, there's a bulletin posted about the St. Louis concert, which doesn't usually happen for each individual show, but I figured that since the calendar only has the 2008 dates, maybe they just put it on there because it was the last 'official concert tour' show of the year. But when I ordered my ticket way, way back in June, I was told that I was in the front row. Then when I got there, I was in the third. So, I thought that maybe the other two rows of seats got added afterwards?

I too was very surprised with the level of suspicion from people when I asked about the stage door. Maybe they're just not used to us loyal groupies... or maybe because there was that elite after party, they were on high alert for people who might try to sneak their way in.

Hey, yeah, that is really weird, I agree. I had the same experience. I was originally told I would be in the third row and then it ended up being the fifth row. I have no idea what that was all about!

But there is, Karen! And you can buy the camcorders really cheaply these days on eBay!

Thanks for the great report. If I had been there I would have been very sad not to have heard "Time Heals Everything", that is one of the songs I can't help but play on "repeat" every time I listen to her Carnegie Hall CD. Did she do "Rose's Turn"?
