I particularly like the bit when she rushes in without knowing Alan doesn't know about his parents death " I'm here now, it won't bring your parents back, but I'm here" And also when SHE ends up crying when breaking the news to Bobbie who has to comfort HER. Very funny stuff. Nice touch, as I think somebody mentioned before, using her real headshot.

I think 2 of the funniest scenes were when they were in the pub, after Bobbie returned from the hospital & I think it was Allan that got up and sang at the party? I have to watch it again to be sure.
And the scene where they were re-enacting a scene from a play.

However, it just felt like, to me personally, that they were missing something and could have done SO much more with the storyline and the whole topic in general! I didn't really see the point in having Bernadette be a "former/retired" Broadway performer either. It had NO real significance to the storyline. The little boy I thought was brilliant and very adorable!

How are the scenes in which Bernadette's character tells the little boy that his parents died and the scene where she tells Bobbie that her brother is dead even remotely funny?? I don't know...maybe I forgot something that happened in one of those scenes? I guess I'll have to go back and watch it because I am lost here. I could think of some other scenes in the movie that were a *lot* funnier than those LOL

From: London | posted: 1/1/2003 at 1:33:06 PM ET well its not particularly WHEN she tells Alan, its just the way she rushes in and shes "I'm here" as if to comfort him but he doesn't even know who she is. When she tells Bobbie its a role reversal thing thats funny because whereas Bobbie remains completely composed at the news ( which is very insensitively phrased) its Bailey who breaks down in tears and is all worked up. Can nobody else see how this is funny? Maybe its the barrier between English and American humour.

| posted: 1/3/2003 at 12:13:41 AM ET I think they made BP's character a Broadway actress so you understood why she was such a free-spirited bohemians type of person. Not that everyone who is free-spirited is an actor and not all actors are free-spirited but I thought that was why she was that way. Just full of passion with her emotions right on the edge. Very unlike Bobbie who is so closed off. Also it gave a natural storyline for Alan to come out of his shell through plays.
The driving was hysterical. And that first scene when she came into the headmaster's office jammering on about mastering the ability to drive a car. I loved when they first got in the car. He was so serious and just the way he said, "You know, I have driven once or twice before". Well the whole thing was so funny. That little boy stole every scene he was in.

Like having her be a painter or something. I just think having her be a Broadway actress was sort of tacky and a little less realistic. I do understand how it supplied them with a way to bring Alan out of his shell though.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 1/3/2003 at 11:01:51 AM ET Maybe they were trying to present the character as someone who had once pursued a dream and failed at it. For whatever reason, Bailey has completely left that life behind and although it's never really explained it seems that she might not have been able to sustain a successful career on Broadway. Most people can't, they work a few years and then fade into obscurity. She even quotes her brother joking about her boulevard of broken dreams. Exactly how this would fit in thematically is kind of hard to say since the script was kind of sketchy and all over the place. It almost seemed like big chunks, that might have filled in the motivations, were cut out leaving everything a little vague. But as usual Bernadette made the most of an underwritten character, and I was pleasantly surprised by Rachel Ward. I remember her from the eighties, when she was an absolutely gorgeous model/actress who couldn't act worth anything. Now, she's managed to develop into a superb actress. As with so many projects, the acting transcends weak writing and directing and makes Bobbies Girl watchable.
