Yes, I seem to recall reading about the Cairo festival too. I adore film festivals and usually take an active interest in both the London and Edinburgh international film festivals, so will look out for any mention of "Come le Formiche" at those events. I don't think I would be inclined to go all the way to Cairo though ... not even for Bernadette.

The DVD release date has been set back a day. It's now showing the 22nd June as the date of the great escape.

The trailer is up on Youtube. Bernadette looks nice, but she's really badly dubbed. Movie looks pretty dreadful.

Okay. If I understood Italian at all, I think I could give a judgement on whether it looked good or not. I agree the dubbing is pretty bad. Maybe if they release it in the U.S., they'll take out her dubbing (and I'm assuming F. Murrah Abraham's) and then add in subtitles for everyone else. One can dream! It was an interesting trailer. What I think of as a typical Italian film - lots of skin! LOL She does look great. Thanks.

Moljul, I agree with you when you say "what I think of as a typical Italian film." Too typical! It looked so exaggeratedly *ITALIAN* that it almost seemed like a parody. Oh well, you can't judge a film by its trailer. But dubbing is always a big mistake. It takes away half an actor's performance and it drains a film's general spontaneity & vitality.

Why on earth would they dub? It's not like foreign language films aren't, pun intended, foreign in the United States. I hope they stick with subtitles. Despite what others may think, many Americans are capable of understanding and enjoying movies not in English.

Isn't it just nice to see Bernadette featured in a new film, whatever the part, whether dubbed or not? I don't see any American film companies lining up to feature her in any US based film.
I'm just trying to figure out how to purchase online the upcoming DVD of this movie. I have already written to the distributors and they haven't replied. Maybe my native English language is a barrier ... is there any Italian speaking BP fan out there who can help?

I suppose the two American actors (who don't speak Italian) are being dubbed with Italian voices because the film is low-budget and probably only slated for DVD release in Italy and no release elsewhere. From the preview it looks as though F. Murray Abraham is playing an Italian character and Bernadette an American who speaks Italian. Since neither one of them are that in real life, there's no way they can use their own voices--especially not Abraham. With Bernadette's character it would have been easier--they could have rewritten it slightly to someone who only speaks English. In the long run though, the producers must have felt it was just simpler and cheaper to go with bad dubbing for a couple of the actors than to bother with limited subtitles. And, remember, Bernadette was only on location for a week or two. This way they didn't have to worry about possibly paying extra to have her loop-in any dialogue post-production.
The part of all this I don't really understand is why they bothered to hire F. Murray Abraham and Bernadette Peters in the first place. Why hire two American actors and take on that extra expense? Maybe there was some hope originally that this might be a selling point in possibly obtaining a U.S. distribution? If so, I think they were being a little overly optimistic about their film's chances.

Or, on the other hand, they may not be bothered about an American distribution. Clearly they are not since they are not "dubbing" it for that audience.
I wouldn't dwell too much on the "American actor" aspect ... isn't an actor an actor? Aren't American actors capable of being taken out of their microcosm and able to thrive in another? And might they not want to?

You may be right. I had the impression that the original intention was to have an "international" release, including U.S., but that it didn't work out that way. I mean I assume they were hoping that it would play in some theaters somewhere and not just go directly to Italian DVD.
I do agree about actors sometimes doing extremely interesting and challenging work outside of their home countries. But if there's a language barrier to the extent that they can't use their own voices then it can be a real problem. I think that's why it's more the exception than the rule for it to work well.

Judging by the synopsis it looks like Bernadette's part isn't a big one (though I hope I'm wrong in that assumption), so why couldn't she have delivered her lines in Italian? Since she's playing an American character she wouldn't be expected to sound like a native speaker of Italian?
I've managed to place a purchase order for the DVD through a DVD rental outlet so will report back should I get my greedy little paws on it.

Scottie, Now I assume (should you get your greedy little paws on it), you are all set to copy the DVD to blank DVDs that play on U.S. machines. Just one for each of us here in the U.S. will be enough. We wouldn't ask for anything more.

I can't tell much of anything from the way the trailer looks on my computer. Of course having it download in 5 second increments may have something to do with that. However one of my DVD players is supposed to play discs from all regions. Might be a good time to test that claim. If they spent any money on the DVD release, maybe there will be language options. Of course that won't help if they dubbed Bernadette.

F. Murray Abraham is playing the 60 year old father of the two ladies so unless Abraham speaks Italian, I don't know why he would have been hired. Bernadette is playing, if I'm deciphering the Google translator correctly, a wealthy 50 year old Italian-American from Brooklyn so except for the Brooklyn part, she's perfectly cast. I assumed most of her scenes would be in English with Abraham and that he would speak English with an Italian accent and they could just subtitle those scenes for the Italian audience and that's why they hired an American actress.
