Arthur Laurents is a highly intelligent man, an intellectual if you will, working in a business with a lot of people who are lavishly talented but not necessarily very bright. For decades his ethnic background, his sexuality and his political views marginalized him in the larger society. There are many legitimate reasons for his bitterness.
He's been around forever and he's made a long list of enemies. I'm sure he's not really the monster he's sometimes painted to be--just a complex, difficult and tormented person.
And, of course, we know that Bernadette brings out the best in everyone. He's probably a "little lamb" to her and not the "mean old man" that so many others see.

Yes, I believe they were together for over fifty years.

Yes, I can just see her bending down to give him a tender little pat on the head from time to time.
On that BBC Broadway documentary I mentioned earlier in the week we get to see a couple of Forbidden Broadway skits - (including someone taking off BP in AGYG - she doesn't sound/look at all like the real thing) and there is an actor pretending to be Andrew Lloyd Webber asking Arthur Laurents why "everybody instantly hates me"? ... Laurents tells him "It saves time".
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....
