From: NYC | posted: 5/18/2006 at 8:29:53 PM ET Galveston Island is a great, great place to visit - and is really nice in May. I may have to try to make this one. Gas up the bus.

From: northern VA | posted: 5/18/2006 at 10:34:15 PM ET The Grand (in Galveston) is lovely and a nice size (not so huge that you need binoculars if you have higher seats). It was built in 1894 and has lots of charm, history, and character, as do the majority of the surviving 19th century/early 20th century theatre and opera houses. It's a tough old thing too, having survived several hurricanes, including the horrendous 1900 hurricane. It was beautifully restored not too long ago. Old school theatre/opera house look and feel. Very beloved by the community. You really feel like you're stepping back in time there.
Bring your bathing suits and sunscreen for the beach, too.
(She couldn't have come back here earlier? Boo hoo. I'll probably be outta here by then. I'd love to see her at the Grand. Jesse Jones Hall is so boring and impersonal.)
