From: NYC | posted: 4/22/2006 at 5:29:47 PM ET I just got home from the TV Museum where I watched the 1987 Tony Awards. It was so fabulous. I know I watched all the Tonys on TV for years when I was growing up, but can't remember them and of course they didn't have the meaning that they do now since I finally get to live my Broadway dream (well mostly live my Broadway dream). Angela Lansbury was the host. Bernadette and Barbara Cook both sang in tribute to Robert Preston who died that year. Bernadette sang "Time Heals Everything" and of course it was gorgeous. She was wearing a very glittery black gown and big diamond earrings. She also presented the Best Actor in the Musical Tony. The whole show was very glittery - rhinestones must have been in short supply after that year. Angela and Bea Arthur sang "Bosom Buddies" and knocked everybody dead. There was a wonderful tribute to George Abbot - he said (roughly) "I have lived this long because I love the theatre so much."

Thanks for the report.
(Rhinestones?? Do you really think our Queen would wear anything less than the real thing?)

From: NYC | posted: 4/22/2006 at 5:48:48 PM ET Well, rhinestones and big shoulders seemed to be all the rage...
The version at the TV museum was fun because it was without breaks for commercials - there would just be a pause and the cameras would stay on - so Angela would come out and have to wait for the cue - they kept making her wait and she would make funny faces at the audience. You could hear chatter from the audience too. It was great.
Jean - if you get that video, I'm going to rent a camel and visit those archives of yours to get a copy...even if I have to hire Ali Baba and his thieves to do the job...

2) Mandy, I think that's the 1986 Tonys' you're thinking of:

When Peters came out, the audience erupted and you could see Agnes De Mille and Helen Hayes watching Peters, looking at each other and nodding in approval as she belted out, "But I at least gotta try"
