The "Bernadette Peters song" is "Making Love Alone."
Since Eddie Murphy is listed as being a cast member,I think this may have been made when Lorne Michaels was not the executive producer. Since that was pretty much a disastrous time for SNL (save for Murphy),that may be the reason why those seasons are rarely shown (the show was very close to cancellation).
Also,it seems that there's some kind of legal issues dealing with "Making Love Alone," so that may be a reason as well.

Jenn is right; it was a very unfunny episode during one of their worst seasons ever. Bernadette wasn't even in most of the skits, and the writers didn't seem to have a clue what to do with her.
It's too bad, because I think she would have been great on the show a few years earlier when they had a better cast and writers.

I think I do have a copy of the show but I don't think it has Making Love Alone on it. The shows were 90 minutes originally but the comedy central program was only 60 minutes so they cut certain things to allow for the reduced time. I guess a song about masterbation was considered something that could be cut. Too bad in that Bernadette's two songs and the guest musicians (Go Go's and Billy Joel) were the only worthy performances in the show.
And was anyone else really disturbed by the way Eddie Murphy seemed to be unable to keep his hands off Bernadette during the closing moments of the show. She seemed to be trying to ignore him so she could just get the show off the air but he seemed like a little pervert to me.

Eddie Murphy did another little scene - I think Bernadette is introducing the Go Go's - where he was pawing all over her. Who acts like that? Show some respect, man!

| posted: 1/26/2005 at 1:08:49 PM ET Ah I forgot about the 42nd Street parody - and the additional connection of Dames at Sea. Just another example of the good parts of the show including Bernadette. Though I did think that one went on a little too long.
I think we can all agree - Eddie Murphy is a pervert. It's bad enough you molest a woman who clearly doesn't want you near her but could you not do it on live TV???

From: northern VA | posted: 1/26/2005 at 1:36:51 PM ET Just so I don't confuse people-I should have mentioned this in my previous post. Lorne Michaels was the original producer of SNL,but he did leave the show for a few years. During this time, the show was badly handled and was almost cancelled. Michaels came back-I don't have the year offhand-and has been exec producer ever since.
There's an excellent history of SNL that came out not too long ago-I'm drawing a blank. It goes into a lot more detail. I think it's by the same author who wrote Late Shift (about the late night "wars" between Leno and Letterman). I'll post a link later tonight (if someone doesn't beat me to it!).

Regardless of who she was dating, it's just really rude and disgusting.
