On the 'Bernadette' CD sleevenotes it says
the songs come from two other albums called
'Now Playing' and 'Bernadette Peters' -
does anyone have these? What other songs
are on them? How come they're not available?
They're not even listed on the CD and Film
section!
Sorry if I'm always pestering you with
questions!
Thanks a lot!

"Bernadette Peters" had two other songs, 'Heartquake' and 'Chico's Girl', and "Now Playing" had four, 'Dedicated to the One I Love', 'The Weekend of a Private Secretary', 'Tears on my Pillow', and 'Maybe My Baby Will'.

They're all really good, so I don't know why they were left off the CD.

Her version of "Dedicated" is really great. It was also released as a single, with a really nice picture sleeve.
My most cherished piece of Bernadette memorablia is the "Bernadette Peters" album that she signed for me, in big bold letters with her silver ink pen. She seemed genuinely suprised to see the 20+year old album cover and I really cracked up at the way she was grinning when she handed it back to me!

And are the sleevenotes correct when they
say that Broadway Baby and some other songs
were recorded live? They sound perfect!

Yes, many (but not all) of the tracks on her two LPs were recorded live in the studio with musicians present and with no technical manipulation, editing, or enhancements. Same as with the entirety of her R&H CD. It's a great, clean, classic sound, but not every one "gets it" in this day and age. At the time, several reviewers, notably Rolling Stone, described the sound as odd and too dry because of the lack of reverb and echo (although they did admit her vocal quality rose to the occasion). It's all a matter of taste--good taste, in my opinion.

What did they mean by "too dry"?

I wonder if a lot of singers today would be afraid of recording live...my personal prejudice is that some folks called singers today only sound good because they are dubbed and redubbed and dubbed over again.

And, on a completely different level, I love Barbra, but I wish she'd just record her "instrument" like she did in her early career (CDs I've recently gone back to -- "Simply Streisand" is a wonder) and ease up on all the orchestration. It's her voice I want to hear.
It is kinda like George Lucas continuing to tinker with the original Star Wars movies and adding special effects -- because he can. When you're that good, there is something to the purity that is the greatness.

Oh, my, I think I just pontificated again...
