| posted: 9/9/2004 at 7:26:39 AM ET With all this talk about broadway shows recouping their investments, it got me thinking about Gypsy. Now I hate to think of it this way but was gypsy considered a broadway flop or was its investments recouped? Shows like TBFO, MO and others have due to their sucess. Gypsy initially had a pretty strong run till about December/January of 2003/2004 so I really don't know.

I don't know what the definition of a "flop" is, nor do I know who sets that definition. But, if you're on the business end of "show business" (i.e. a producer), if you don't recoup it might be considered a "flop". However, there are certainly other measures, some not so cut-and-dried, that might just make some say a 14- month run and a critical success is NOT a flop.
I remember reading somewhere (probably on that other chat board) that very few Broadway shows recoup.
I wanna be a producer...

investment now - it says on Playbill.com
that it cost $8.5million, but it also
says it's made over $40million! It must
have made back it's money ages ago, so
why announce it now?

| posted: 9/9/2004 at 4:52:18 PM ET They have brought in over $40 million over the last year but their weekly expenses are probably about $500K or maybe a bit more. The $8.5 milliion was the money it took to simply get it up on the stage a year ago. They have to pay all those salaries, do PR, pay rent, electricity, royalties to the creators, etc. So very little of their weekly ticket sales goes to paying back their investors. So it takes a long time to get their money to them. Once the investors are fully paid, you actually get to claim that you are showing a profit. It is extremely hard to pay back the initial investment in a year's time. Though AGYG did it.
