Okay....

Although I wasn't successful in finding the book about Queens,I did find some recordings that were interesting. Anyone have any more information on them? Of course, there could be another performer by the name of Bernadette Peters...?

-Flirting with the Edge:Celtic and Beyond. The person of responsibility is John Whelan, and it came out in 1998. The entry's notes note "various performers including Bernadette Peters...." That's all I've got,and it doesn't look like Amazon has it.

-Forever Young,Forever Free. POR is Lee Holdridge (??I can't read my handwriting!). This is a record, and it came out in 1976. Entry notes that she sings the title song.

-Vancouver Public Library in BC has the honor of being the only library in the world to have a copy of Gee Whiz (unless some library doesn't have all its records cataloged, which is very possible). Just FYI,although the date reads 1986? Maybe a reprint?

-Now this last one is the one which puzzles me the most, and I'm wondering if this is even our favorite person named Bernadette. The date is 1958-so she would have been what....10? It's called Where the Girls Are.

Oh,here's an Amazon link. Looks like it's been reprinted on CD. Anyone know? Am I just the last to know about these recordings?

I've got the John Whelan cd...Bernadette only sings one song on it called "Dublin Lady." They apparently are friends and he played at her wedding. As for the others, I can't help you with those.

Amazon.com does have a clip of it if you search for the "Flirting with the Edge" cd and then click on "Dublin Lady." It is very short but will give you an idea about the type of song it is...

EDIT: Here is a portion of his liner notes from this cd when he talks about Bernadette:

"Of course, I can't say enough about Bernadette Peters. I played at her wedding a few years ago, and we got to be really good friends through the music. She's enormously talented-she absolutely charmed everyone in the studio. Dublin Lady turned out to be a perfect choice. It's one of the lesser known traditional songs, and her striking voice makes this the best renditions I've ever heard."

"Forever Young, Forever Free" was the title song of a movie (a.k.a Lollipop) made in South Africa about a little boy. I think Karen Valentine was in it. It was a complete flop. Bernadette sang the song on the soundtrack; the LP is occasionally for sale on ebay. I have a 45 version labelled "promotional copy--not for sale." Rod McKuen wrote the lyrics. It has a very seventies "Tubular Bells/Way We Were" sound to it.
"Where the Girls Are" is a British series of recordings anthologizing American girl group recordings from the late fifties to the late sixties. It has at least half a dozen volumes. Some of Bernadette's sixties singles are included on a couple of the issues. The date 1958 must refer to the original release date of one of the cuts--but not anything by Bernadette.
I agree that 1986 must be some sort of Canadian rerelease date for "Gee Whiz." Otherwise it makes no sense.
Mandy has already described "Flirting with the Edge."
Hope this helps a little.

Go here to buy "Radio Daze: Pop Hits of the 80's, Vol. 1", which includes Bernadette's famous "Gee Whiz":

(I love her "Dublin Lady"--it shows one side of her performing personality that just really affects me--kind of, well sad isn't exactly it but close; maybe thoughtful, heartfelt, oh whatever, I like it.)

I LOVE Dublin Lady. It is so sad and so beautiful and we all know what Bernadette can do with a dramatic song. Her voice is so haunting on it. I play it quite often.

There are a couple of other "special artists" on the album though Bernadette is by far the most famous. The rest of the songs are of John Whelan and his band. If you like Celtic music some of the tracks are quite enjoyable.
