hopefully the site will work.....anyway, I think its very interesting to read some of the posts on there.....personally speaking, comparing merman and peters....peters triumphs......this is a woman who can do 8 shows a week, do a very demanding run, and still come away with amazing power, breath control, and vibretto......from what i've heard, ROSE ruined mermans singing voice...a true performer would know how to handle herself and find ways to get through the role but still give a performance of a lifetime, NIGHTLY!!!

His biggest beef with her seemed to be that she never quite transcended her own Ethelness to become Rose - she was always Ethel Merman on stage, throwing out casual in-jokes with the other actors during the performances and such.

| posted: 6/29/2004 at 1:12:03 PM ET Arthur Laurents never seems to like anyone in the role of Mama Rose. I'm surprised any productions were ever done from the way he is. It's like a mother who never believes ANY woman is good enough for her son. He believes no woman is good enough to play Rose (although he is the one who wanted Bernadette...so good choice there at least) lol
hahaha wow! I just read the comment I had posted on there. I can't believe it's been almost a year since I wrote that.

From: New York, NY | posted: 6/29/2004 at 2:50:09 PM ET Laurents seems like such a schmuck (excuse my language). From interviews I have read with him, he seems to be this know-it-all, nasty egomaniac. Ugh. He probably liked the Angela Lansbury/Tyne Daly versions since he directed them.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 6/29/2004 at 3:53:09 PM ET It's true that you don't hear too many positive personal comments about Laurents. Harvey Fierstein, who worked with him on La Cage, was quoted as saying "Arthur Laurents is proof that only the good die young."
He's undeniably a very bitter person, yet Sondheim and Bernadette seem to get along with him okay (or at least, used to).
