"Bernadette Peters is amazing because, offstage, she'll come so close to me, but then she'll back off, almost like we're playing a scene. It makes it deeper and deeper as we go along."

From: Boston | posted: 3/2/2004 at 12:38:49 PM ET She mentioned she had seen a video of Gypsy with Ethel Merman. I didn't know such a thing existed. Anyone know anything about this? I don't think Lincoln Center this?

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 3/2/2004 at 2:11:28 PM ET I don't think Lincoln Center started their video archive until the early seventies. It must be some private video; possibly something in the personal collection of Laurents or Sondheim. And that comment by Tammy Blanchard was a little bit cryptic. I couldn't really figure it out either--I just assumed the quote was slightly garbled by the paper, since that happens all the time.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 3/2/2004 at 2:29:39 PM ET Maybe Tammy's thought about Bernadette off-stage was a continuation from the preceding sentence/thought about their relationship on stage ("At first, there'd be moments on stage when my character used to hug Rose back, but, as time went on, a lot of sentiment went away by itself," she said.)
But yes, it may have been a condensed version of a longer, abstract conversation.
I don't take these quotes too seriously...
