This is actualy a fun new game I cal "Funniest GYPSY bloopers!" If you saw something wild, scary, or funny happen during a live performance of GYPSY, post it here! This should be fun!
Here's mine...
When I saw the show, Bernadette and John began the number SMALL WORLD. It was beautiful, and going perfectly. Just as tears were welling up in my eyes, Bernadette (sitting on the wicker basket) almost slipped right off of it, when it nearly broke. (The lid slipped into place, I think). Bernadette and John both smiled, trying hard not to laugh. Then on the line "Funny... isn't it?" They both nearly lost it! I have never laughed so hard (so quietly) in all my life! They made it through the song, but laughing all the way!

At the matinee July 30: Second Act: in the “Strip” sequence, Gypsy (Tammy Blanchard) comes out in one of her several costume changes (pinky/peach-colored dress), holding the large black hat, but the bottom of the dress is not attached and it starts to fall. Tammy holds on to the bottom, drops the hat, continues with the number, big smile, etc, drops the line about the hat (“what’ll I do when hats go out” or something ), turns to go behind the curtain for the last costume change, and FALLS--we see a stagehand closing the curtain which remains partially open around the fallen Gypsy. Next scene “Garden of Eden”, all is well, no obvious effects. After the curtain bows, I hear the conducter explaining to the orchestra members (who, being in the pit, didn't see what happened). I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall after the show to see/hear what was said!

| posted: 12/29/2003 at 2:29:43 PM ET At the first preview performance, during the "Mr. Goldsone" number, Bernadette accidentily hit Tulsa in the face wen she flung her arm back. As soon as she did that she contiued to sing the song, but she put her hand on his face and they both smiled as if tosay, "I'm Sorry."..."It's ok." lol
The staging has been changed since that day obviosuly.
At another performance, during the "Small World" number, when Bernadette was sitting on the basket she acidently dropped her coat on the floor, so when she picked it up she started rocking it in her arms like a baby. She even rocked it again towards the end of the number just for fun. lol She and John were really giddy that night I remember. It was so funny.

Registered: 6/27/2003 | posted: 12/29/2003 at 6:29:32 PM ET One time I saw it, during the 'Mr. Goldstone' number, Bernadette accidentally sang "What's the matter Mr. G" first instead of the "Everybody give a cheer" line which really goes first. It was funny because she got out like, "What's the matter," and then got this look on her face like, 'whoops, what am I singing?!' and then giggled her way through the rest of the line. Everyone laughed a little, and then went on as normal, but then when it came time to really sing that line, she sang it like, "Nooow... this line goes in" and everyone smiled/laughed again. It was cute. Another night... it may have been opening night, actually, Tessie's wings got caught in Electra's costume during "Gimmick", so there was a good twenty seconds of trying to pull them free, and then they all just went on as normal. Too bad there can't be a tv show of Broadway bloopers like they have for tv, huh? What fun that would be!

Yeah...that would be awesome. I love bloopers, which is why I enjoy reading this thread so much. Unfortunately I don't have any funny moments to share.

| posted: 12/30/2003 at 1:16:06 PM ET ooo, I thought of a few others. This was actually on opening night I think, when Bernadette stammers foward singing, "But not Rooose" during "Some People", and then she throws the Father's Railroad award in her bag. Well, she accidently missed the bag and it fell on the floor.
Another time a piece of Electra's costume came flying off and landed in the middle of the stage and people kept stepping on it for a while...at least up until Gypsy's number.
That is a nice idea about the bloopers, but that would be so expensive. They would have to record every performance of every show in order to catch the bloopers that might occur. I think it's more fun to be in the moment and see them live. The one where Carol Burnett's skirt fell down in "Putting It Together" was a fluke that they caught that on tape. They happened to be taping it for Paperview that day. But I'll tell ya, when I watch it on tape, it's not as funny as when I saw it in person.

That's true, but what about people like me who don't get the chance to see it live?

They're too random because they're not supposed to happen in the first place. But they sure are funny when they do happen.

I just remember Tammy giving the weirdest look at the puddle forming on the floor *right after the lamb is given to her* and everyone else trying not to laugh. She held that lamb at arms length for the rest of the scene.

It was a saturday matinee and one of the characters has a line that rhymes with "tit" i cant remember what the real line is though, right after he says it the scene changes and bernadette is front and center with frank and the company behind her and at her sides. The guy yells his line with such enthusiasm and yells "TIT" and had a look of astonishment that he said that. When the scene changed bernadette could not hold it in, and the company including her had a laugh. She tried to go on but couldnt, laughing hysterically and crying. Of course the audience just applauded like crazy and she said "dont encourage this, im getting too old for all this" several times they tried to start again and frank and her had the hardest time goin on. It took her 5 minutes to regain composure, but it was hilarious and unlike ANYTHING ive ever seen.
