 NEW THEATRE BOOK FROM=20
 NEW LINE THEATRE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
 IS IN BOOKSTORES NOW=20=20=20=20

 ST. LOUIS, Nov. 9, 2001 . . . New Line Theatre is proud to announce that=20
 Scott Miller, the company's artistic director, has had his third book about=
 =20
 musical theatre released by Heinemann Publishing -- Rebels with Applause:=20
 Broadway's Ground-Breaking Musicals (Heinemann, 2001, ISBN 0-325-00357-2) -=
 -=20
 and it is in bookstores now. His first two musical theatre books were From=
 =20
 Assassins to West Side Story and Deconstructing Harold Hill.

 This third volume will follow the format of the first two, with each chapte=
 r=20
 analyzing one American musical in great depth, focusing on textual and=20
 musical themes, insight into the motivations and backstories of characters,=
 =20
 the historical and social context of the action, the creators' intentions,=
 =20
 the subtext of the book and lyrics, the show's relevance to our contemporar=
 y=20
 world, and other fascinating information -- detailed and in-depth enough fo=
 r=20
 professionals yet accessible enough for casual fans. The shows covered=20
 include The Cradle Will Rock, Pal Joey, Oklahoma!, Anyone Can Whistle, Hair=
 ,=20
 Jacques Brel, The Ballad of Little Mikey, Songs for a New World, Floyd=20
 Collins, and Rent. Of these ten shows, St. Louis audiences have seen New Li=
 ne=20
 productions of seven.

 The editors at Amazon.com, the largest bookseller on the world wide web,=20
 called Miller's first book, From Assassins to West Side Story, "so=20
 articulate, insightful, and downright playful that it can be read simply fo=
 r=20
 pleasure." Stage Directions magazine said, "His take on Into the Woods is=20
 especially fine, but the entire book is well done and eminently readable. O=
 ur=20
 highest recommendation." The first book includes chapters on Assassins,=20
 Cabaret, Carousel, Company, Godspell, Gypsy, How to Succeed, Into the Woods=
 ,=20
 Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Mis=E9rables, Man of La Mancha, Merrily We Roll=
 =20
 Along, My Fair Lady, Pippin, Sweeney Todd, and West Side Story.=20

 Miller's second book, Deconstructing Harold Hill, includes chapters on=20
 Camelot, Chicago (which New Line will produce in June 2001), The King and I=
 ,=20
 March of the Falsettos, The Music Man, Passion, Ragtime, and Sunday in the=
 =20
 Park with George. The national theatre newspaper Backstage said of the book=
 ,=20
 "Scott Miller displays such sustained passion for musical theatre that it c=
 an=20
 only be that this man lives his life for the medium. . . the chapters are a=
 ll=20
 presented in an infectiously readable, undeniably intelligent manner that=20
 should be a happy help to theatre professionals interested in producing a=20
 particular show." Booklist said, "Miller's book is too fascinating to be=20
 hogged by would-be directors. Students of theater will find it a godsend, a=
 nd=20
 general audience members for musical theater should find it quite appealing=
 ."=20
 Show Music magazine said, "It's clear Miller is passionate about and knows=
 =20
 his subjects."

 Miller has also contributed to five other books, Stephen Sondheim: A=20
 Casebook, a collection of essays by the top musical theatre experts in the=
 =20
 country, as well as The Stage Directions Guide to Directing, The Stage=20
 Directions Guide to Publicity, The Stage Directions Guide to Musicals, and=
 =20
 Readings on West Side Story. He has also written two plays and the books,=20
 music, and lyrics for eight musicals, as well as music for film, television=
 ,=20
 and radio. His first novel, In the Blood, was published last year, and his=
 =20
