It's been a while since I've posted on the boards-I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday! We've had illness and hospitalization in the family,so I haven't been able to be online regularly. I'm hoping that things will calm down soon so that life will get back to normal-or a new normal-soon.

While this year has not ended the way I would have liked it to-I couldn't care less about New Year's celebrations right now-I'm hoping that 2004 will be a much better year. Lots of changes for me-graduation from grad school, moving, and a new job by the end of May-and I hope everyone else has good changes-if any changes are in the forecast-as well!

So....anybody get anything really cool for the holidays? One of my most prized gifts-apart from a lovely cross necklace from my grandmother-was the Sondheim DVD collection. I've not been able to watch any of the DVDs,but I'm very happy to have it.

I also received the OCRs of Wicked,The Boy From Oz,and La Boheme. Truth be told,I was not immediately taken with Wicked, but the CD is really growing on me. I've not listened to TBFO enough to have a definite opinion. I do enjoy the La Boheme recording.

I love the latest Cyndi Lauper CD-my sister received it and I'm going to buy my own copy.

Anyway-I hope everyone has a safe New Year's celebration, and looks forward to a blessed and productive 2004. God bless!

Happy New Year Jenn Sorry to hear about your family Hopefully things will be better in the new year. Congrats on your future Graduation and job though. At least you have that to look foward to.
I completely forgot to ask for the Sondheim Collection for Christmas, so I didn't get that; but I did get Ed Sullivan's Best of Broadway DVD, the first 3 seasons of Friends on DVD, The Avenue Q cast recording, some nice jewlery and clothes, a bathrobe from Victoria's Secret, and with the money I received from some family, I bought myself 3 DVD's: Finding Nemo, Hello Dolly, and All That Jazz.

I hope everyone else had a nice holiday.

Christine-
Thanks for your kind thoughts. You'll have to tell us about the Ed Sullivan DVD-I've had that on my Half.com list for a while. Sounds like you had a lovely holiday!

Well Jean, at least your car had a nice Christmas. lol

Jenn, The Sullivan DVD is really good. I had never heard of it, so when I got it I was very interested. The highlights (in my opinion) are the 2 segments that have Julie Andrews. In one she's singing "Wouldn't it be Loverly" from My Fair Lady; and in another she and Richard Burton sing "What Do the Simple Folk Do?" from Camelot.
There is also a great segment with Carol Channing singing, "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" and she goes out into the audience and flings diamonds (false I assume) around.

Other great moments:
>John Raitt, Celeste Holm, Florence Henderson, Barbra Cook, and Richard Collett singing the main song from "Oklahoma."

>Pat Suzuki singing, "I Enjoy Being A Girl" from Flower Drum Song.

>Richard Kiley singing, "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha (not as good as Brian Stokes Mitchell if you ask me).

>Gwen Verdon and dancers performing, "Im a Brass Band" from Sweet Charity.

>and Pearl Bailey and cast of the all African American cast production of Hello, Dolly! (1967) performing, "Before the Parade Passes By."

There is a second DVD coming out of more Broadway Segments from Ed Sullivan. I thought it was already out and went looking for it like a moron, but I must have been mistaken because the stores all have pleanty of copies of the first one, and not the second one. lol

Jean-
Thank you. It sounds like you were very good to your car.

Christine-That Sullivan DVD sounds wonderful. I'll have to get it. I was a bit disappointed with the Lost Treasures show that was recently shown on PBS,and the Sullivan DVD sounds like the real deal.

Do you know the story behind the Camelot sequence on the Ed Sullivan show? Forgive me if this is old news to you,but it's such a good story-maybe someone else hasn't heard it,and it illustrates a point I'm about to make. He devoted,I believe, about a half hour to segments from the show. the show wasn't doing spectacular business at the time, but after the segments on Ed Sullivan aired, the lines were around the block to get tickets.

Reading your post about the DVD made me realize how much I miss Rosie O'Donnell's show. I'm not a big fan,but I always appreciated how she showcased Broadway performers and shows. There's not a vehicle like that anymore-and I liked how she promoted the plays as well as the musicals. What a shame that no other show has that kind of interest.

I miss Rosie's show too beause of the Broadway segments she used to have.

Livin' It Up With Ally and Jack is a new talk show, and they sometimes (and by that I mean more than any other talk show) have Broadway segments. They had Delta Burke on the other day, and I saw a great segment with the new cast of Hairspray. Unfortunately for them they are up against Regis and Kelly in many timeslots (NYC being one of them), so a lot of people have never even seen their show. It's on CBS at 9am in NY...not sure about other areas? Truthfully, I'm not at all impressed with them or the show (I prefer Regis and Kelly); but they do get some pretty good guests.
