Registered: 12/29/2003 | posted: 12/29/2003 at 11:16:56 AM ET Does anyone have a clue about how I could find out which actors take which nights off? I'm planning a NYC trip in February & would love to plan wisely so I could see all my favorites. Mainly Sutton & Bernadette.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 12/29/2003 at 11:32:19 AM ET I guess you know that Sutton is leaving TMM, I think Feb. 15. I have no idea whether she'll be performing in the show until she leaves.
As far as Bernadette, if she takes a vacation, it should be announced in various mediums-on several Internet sites, and also on the official Gypsy site (www.gypsythemusical.com). Bernadette generally does not just take time off unless there is an unforseen illness or a scheduled vacation.
As far as other performers on Broadway, the Telecharge or Ticketmaster site is always a good first place to go for scheduled absences, as well as the official site of the particular show--but obviously it is impossible to predict illness.
(If you had planned to see the Boy From Oz, it is closed from Feb. 1-6 (and again in March) while Hugh Jackman takes a vacation. If you are planning to see Movin Out, generally Parkinson, Selya and Cavanaugh do not do matinees, although there have been exceptions.)

From: New York City | posted: 12/29/2003 at 3:56:46 PM ET Also, Donna Murphy was out of WONDERFUL TOWN last week (illness) but has apparently been feeling better. You might want to check, though, if you go see that one, because she has apparently been suffering from a recurring illness.
Kristin Chenoweth will be out of WICKED the first week in May (May 1st - 7th) to do CANDIDE with the NY Philharmonic. Currently, Norbert Leo Butz (one of the principals) is out until January 22nd with a back injury.
Generally, though, listed players always go on unless a specific announcement is made at the time of the performance (or, like Jean said, if a vacation is announced ahead of time.)
www.Playbill.com is a really good resource, as is www.broadway.com
Have fun!

Q: Any funny incidents or accidents with Kristin (Chenoweth)?
Norbert Leo Butz: I have this Errol Flynn moment where I swing in on this rope. One night in San Francisco, I let go of the rope and the rest of the actors started cracking up. I turned around and the rope had literally tied around Kristin's head and got caught on her crown and was pulling her off stage. It was like watching Barbie get hung.

Just a word about-and on behalf of-understudies--I saw Wonderful Town with Donna Murphy's understudy, Linda Muggleston, and I thought she (and the show) was quite good. Never having seen Murphy, I can't judge as to the relative merits of each performer, but...sometimes it is not so bad to see the understudy.
I also saw the "alternate performers" at a matinee of Movin Out, and, while I have seen Parkinson a few times in other things, I can't really say what, if anything, I missed by not seeing the "first cast", as I enjoyed the show.
That said, I would not willingly see Bernadette's understudy (hope I'm not offending anyone, but just the way I feel.)

| posted: 12/30/2003 at 12:59:25 PM ET I saw Taboo a couple of weeks ago, and 2 of the main leads were out (Raul Esparza...who had the flu, and Liz Callaway...who had just given birth), but I was absolutely thrilled with the understudies. I had never seen the production to begin with, nor had I seen anyone who was in it in any other shows, so I didn't have a problem seeing understudies. I thought they did a great job!
"That said, I would not willingly see Bernadette's understudy"
It's funny you say that because I and a friend of mine purposley went and saw Bernadette's understudy (Maureen Moore) back when Bernadette was on vacation in early October. Then again, we had already had the privelage of seeing Bernadette in the show a couple of times, so we both thought it would be nice to see Maureen's take on the role. I am not unwilling to see an understudy. I certainly won't go see them for $100+, but I will go see them. I would probably be dissapointed if I bought tickets ahead of time expecting to see a certain actor or actress and then they were out; but I do sometimes get tickets to a show purposely to see the understudy when the main actor is out.

That's my fear! I only get to the city once or twice a year & just cross my fingers that I'll get to see the actors I care about the most.
